Lake Tondano stretches across 48 km² in the highlands of northern Sulawesi, a short distance from Tomohon, a town renowned as the gateway to the Lokon and Empung volcanoes. The largest freshwater expanse in North Sulawesi province, it occupies a volcanic caldera surrounded by mountains and terraced rice paddies, at an altitude that softens the equatorial climate.

The site combines several points of interest: a remarkable geological setting inherited from ancient volcanic activity, abundant aquatic biodiversity and vibrant Minahasa local culture reflected in the fishing villages along the shores. A volcanic formation and a Minahasa legend
The lake formed following an eruption of Mount Kaweng, whose collapse created the basin now occupied by its waters. Minahasa oral tradition associates this phenomenon with a legend: two lovers defied a family ban on marriage; their elopement provoked the volcano's wrath, whose eruption gave birth to the lake. The word "Kaweng" itself means "to marry" in the local language, anchoring the tale firmly in the site's toponymy.
This mythological dimension remains present in regional culture and in the way inhabitants speak of their lake. The riverside villages also preserve traditional fishing practices that punctuate daily life.

Landscapes and islands
Two islands rise from the water, accessible by boat from the shores. The best-known, Likri Island, occupies a central position and appears from afar like a floating meadow. The crossing can be arranged directly with local fishermen. From the island, the panorama encompasses the volcanic ridges that frame the basin.
Fishing and aquatic life
The lake is home to a varied fish population: tilapia, Channa striata (snakeheads), carp. It also harbours freshwater crustaceans, notably shrimp and local freshwater lobsters, which you'll find in the warungs lining the shores. Fishing remains the primary economic activity around the lake, and it's possible to join certain fishermen in the early morning hours.
The Sumaru Endo hot spring
Immediately adjacent to the lake, the sulphurous Sumaru Endo hot spring offers a natural complement to your visit. Highly frequented by local inhabitants, it's a common stop after a lake excursion.

The rainy season, from November to March, doesn't prevent a visit but reduces landscape visibility.
How to get there
Lake Tondano is located approximately an hour and a half's drive from Manado, the provincial capital of North Sulawesi, and about thirty minutes from Tomohon. Access by private car or taxi is most convenient; local minibuses (mikrolet) also serve the area from Manado, with a change in Tondano town. Roads wind through volcanic terrain: allow extra time for travel and drive cautiously on winding sections.
