Photographer of Indonesian volcanoes and trails, based in Yogyakarta

Before drawing up an itinerary, you have to observe, walk, listen to the locals and understand the place. Only then can an adventure trip remain authentic.

Dominic

From northern France, Dominic discovered photography at a young age, which quickly became his primary way of exploring the world. In 1992, his assignment in West Papua, documenting Papuan communities on the highlands of Irian Jaya, marked a turning point. Rather than pursuing a European career, he chose to establish himself in Southeast Asia, and later settled in Indonesia in 1996. Founder of Azimuth Adventure Travel in 1999, Dominic developed a pioneering agency for trekking and volcano climbing in Indonesia. His approach rests on three core requirements: professionalism, safety and respect for nature. A field man at heart, he long accompanied travelers himself, surveying routes, engaging with local inhabitants and refining a vision of travel based on observation, exploration and responsibility. With Dominic, Indonesia is discovered through trails, volcanoes, encounters and a thoughtful eye on the territories explored.

Everything you need to know about Indonesia

Our local experts share their knowledge to prepare your trip.

When to visit Indonesia?

The archipelago stretches over nearly 5,000 kilometres and straddles the equator: there is therefore no single ideal season, but rather windows suited to each island. For Java, Bali, Lombok and Flores, the dry season runs from April to October, the most comfortable period for climbing Mount Bromo, Kawah Ijen or Mount Rinjani, and for exploring the terraced rice paddies of Jatiluwih. Conversely, the Moluccas and Raja Ampat are best discovered between October and April, when the sea is calmer. Sumatra, being more humid, remains accessible almost year-round if you're prepared for occasional tropical showers. Travelling to Indonesie in July–August is still wonderful, but we recommend May, June or September to enjoy dry weather and fewer crowds.

What budget should I plan for a trip to Indonésie?

The cost of a trip to Indonesia depends primarily on the distance between islands and your desired level of comfort. On the ground, daily life remains affordable: a warung serves nasi goreng for just a few euros, and an English-speaking driver-guide can be negotiated reasonably on a daily basis. What weighs more heavily on the budget are internal flights between Java, Bali, Sulawesi, or Papua, as well as character accommodations—lodges overlooking a volcano or traditional houses in Toraja. For a tailor-made itinerary of two to three weeks, with full board on isolated segments, expect generally between €2,500 and €4,500 per person excluding international flights. A phinisi cruise in Raja Ampat will push the budget higher, but the experience justifies it.

Why organize your trip with a local agency in Indonesia?

With 17,000 islands, six official religions and over 700 vernacular languages, Indonésie cannot be grasped from a Parisian office. Based in Yogyakarta since 1999, we know the Mérapi trackers, the phinisi captains in Labuan Bajo, the host families of Tana Toraja, the Papuan guides in the Baliem Valley. This on-the-ground presence changes everything: we adjust an itinerary the day before if a volcano stirs, we find a domestic flight when Garuda cancels, we reach the right local contact directly. Our French-Indonesian team, entirely English-speaking, dialogues with you before departure and remains available 24/7 during your trip. This is what a true travel agency in Indonésie, conceived and operated from the ground, makes possible.

What to see on a trip to Indonésie?

A first trip to Indonésie often starts with Java: Yogyakarta and its batik craftsmanship, sunrise over Borobudur, the nocturnal climb of Bromo followed by Kawah Ijen and its blue flames. Bali is better discovered inland, around Ubud, temples of Amed and bali aga villages, rather than on saturated coastlines. Further east, Flores chains Komodo dragons, colorful Kelimutu lakes and woven villages of Bena. Sulawesi reserves Toraja funerals and the seabed of Bunaken; Sumatra, the orangutans of Bukit Lawang and Lake Toba; Papua, moving encounters in the Baliem Valley. Each itinerary has its own pace, geography and desires.

What our travelers say

5
89 reviews incl. 82 on Google
Java for the temples, waterfalls, climbing Mount Bromo and Kawah Ijen at night, visiting craft villages, rice fields and discovering the local gastronomy as well as the first day in Bali, all with our guide Krisna who has all the qualities required for this profession: excellent command of the English language, extensive knowledge, teaching skills, punctuality, attentiveness, patience, adaptability, curiosity, a sense of exchange and a sharp sense of humor. He was a fascinating guide with whom we truly enjoyed discovering the island of Java and our first day exploring Bali.

Indonesia

Our trip was perfect regarding the destination and discovering another culture, very well organized, and a team that listened to us. A small disappointment with the second accommodation in Sanur where we stayed only 4 nights, so we made do with it. The place was very beautiful, very spacious and authentic, but with bathrooms in very poor condition, blinds that didn't work, a very old kitchen and despite everything a bit dirty, bedding and towels stained which really spoiled the beauty of the place.

We just got back from our stay in Bali. It was simply amazing. Our trek with Nyoman went really well. He's a charming person, kind and attentive, and he taught us so much. He's truly a wonderful person.
