The name "Sentani" means "we live here in peace." It was reportedly given in 1898 by Christian pastor BL Bin during his missionary work in Papua, and later adopted by local communities.

A legend tells how the lake formed where a giant dragon fell. According to oral tradition, nomads from what is now Papua New Guinea rode this creature in search of a land to settle. The most favorable period runs from May to October, during the dry season. Rainfall is then light and boat outings more comfortable. From November to April, tropical showers are frequent but brief, and vegetation is at its peak.

To attend the Lake Sentani Festival, aim for June. For a quieter visit, September and October offer a good balance between weather and fewer crowds.

How to get there

The lake can be reached in about 30 minutes by car from Jayapura, by taxi or local transport. Sentani Airport, located immediately adjacent to the lake, is served from Jakarta and several major Indonesian cities. The flight from Jakarta typically includes a stopover and represents half a day of travel accounting for time differences and connections.
