History

The term "pontianak" originates from Malay folklore, representing the vengeful spirit of a woman who died in childbirth. Capable of transforming into a beautiful woman, it attacks men, harms pregnant women and devours newborns, yet can be neutralized by a nail driven through the back of the neck.

The city of Pontianak was founded on October 23, 1771 by Syarif Abdurrahman Alkadrie, after clearing a forested area at the confluence of the Landak and Kapuas rivers. Abdurrahman was crowned sultan in 1778, establishing the Kadriah Palace and the Masjid Jami as centers of government.

Legend has it that Abdurrahman had to drive out pontianaks from the region by ordering cannon fire to secure the area for his people. Over time, Pontianak became an important commercial crossroads, attracting Malay, Dayak and Chinese traders. The latter migrated en masse in the late 19th century due to civil war and poverty in China.

In the early 20th century, the Dutch took control of Pontianak to exploit its natural resources, sparking local resistance. This colonial period marked the city's history, strategically positioned for trade on the Kapuas River.

By Bus

Bus services from Kuching and Malaysia to Pontianak are available via carriers such as Damri, SJS and Biaramas Express. The journey takes approximately 6 hours, passing through the Entikong border. Fares range from RM45 to RM75.

By Air

Several airlines including Garuda Indonesia, Airasia, Lion Air, Sriwijaya Air, Kalstar Aviation, Xpress Air, Maswings and Citilink connect Pontianak to various destinations in Indonésie and Malaysia. Taxis and Damri buses (costing 35,000 IDR) are available from the airport to the city.

By Boat

Boat travel is the least expensive way to travel between islands, though it's mainly recommended for adventurers. Journeys can last 12 to 18 hours from Jakarta and the Java Sea can be rough.

By Car

To get around Pontianak, the most convenient way is to take a taxi or rent a car. The city is connected by roads, though some are in poor condition.

Public buses and minivans are also available for a more economical option (2,000 IDR). However, they can be confusing as they are not well marked, and most people do not speak English. Buses follow color-coded routes, such as yellow, red, gray, blue, light green and dark green. Yellow buses, for example, serve Jl. Tanjungpura and Jl. Imam Bonjol. Red buses go to Jeruju. Gray buses follow Jl. Gajahmada and dark green buses cover the Kota Baru area. There is no central bus station, but some buses gather at Jl. Tanjungpura.

To cross the river, a boat is convenient and inexpensive (1,000 IDR).
