Lake Menjer is a volcanic lake perched at 1,200 meters elevation, about thirty minutes' drive from Wonosobo, on the island of Java. With its 750,000 m² of surface area and depths exceeding 45 meters, it is the largest natural lake in Wonosobo district. Framed by the hills of the Dieng plateau and bordered by tea plantations, it combines mid-altitude mountain landscapes, Dutch colonial heritage and local legends.

History and legends

Lake Menjer resulted from an ancient eruption of Mount Pakuwaja, whose caldera gradually filled with water fed by springs from the hillside and the region's high rainfall.

During the Dutch colonial period, the lake was transformed into a hydroelectric reservoir. The colonists built downstream the Garung hydraulic dam, still in operation today: it supplies much of the Dieng tourist area with electrical power. This dual function, natural and industrial, explains the regulated character of the water body.

The site is also rooted in local oral tradition. The most well-known legend recounts a thwarted love story between Princess Shinta Dewi and King Kidang Garungan, whose encounter supposedly gave birth to the lake. Another, darker version attributes its appearance to the mysterious disappearance of two young women from Menjer village, which subsequently lent its name to the lake.

A walking trail of approximately 400 m circumscribes the lake in part and allows you to grasp its scale. The banks, planted with pines, offer several clear viewpoints over the water and surrounding hills. At sunrise, morning mist covers the surface before gradually dispersing, revealing the characteristic emerald-green color.

To observe the emerald-green color of the water, the most favorable window falls shortly after sunrise, as the mist lifts. Plan for an early arrival.
