Pasir Putih, a name meaning "white sand" in Indonesian, is a beach on the east coast of Java, in the Probolinggo region. Despite its name, the sand here is gray in color, a volcanic legacy of the island. The beach stretches between two hills, facing a small islet offshore, and remains above all a swimming spot frequented by locals and travelers in transit to Mount Bromo.

Set within the village of Kampung Pasir Puteh, roughly 1 km from the hamlet center, the beach is surrounded by small houses and grilled fish stalls. A short walk through the village allows you to observe the daily life of Javanese fishermen.

Pasir Putih Beach can be reached by car or motorbike from Probolinggo, the main reference city on Java's east coast. Surabaya, to the west, is the most common entry point for international travelers: the national highway runs along the coast and directly serves the area.

Facilities

The beach has basic amenities: a few cafés and bars (warungs) serving local dishes and refreshments, as well as restrooms. There are no hotel facilities directly on the sand; accommodations are found in Probolinggo or further afield on the road to Bromo.

Entry fee and length of visit

A modest entrance fee is generally requested to access the beach and parking. Plan for 1 to 3 hours depending on whether you limit yourself to swimming or add a boat trip.

When to go

East Java's climate follows a tropical two-season pattern. The dry season, from May to October, offers the best conditions: clear skies, calm seas and steady temperatures around 28–30 °C. It's also the ideal season to combine beach time with a climb of Mount Bromo.

From November to April, the wet season brings frequent showers, often late in the afternoon. Swimming is still possible in the mornings, but the sea can be choppier. Weekends, especially during Indonesian school holidays, see a marked increase in local visitors.
