Maubisse is a mountain town in East Timor, located 70 km south of Dili in Ainaro district. Perched at more than 1,400 metres altitude, it offers a cool climate that contrasts with the humid heat of the coast, as well as a heritage shaped by Mambai culture and Portuguese colonial presence.

The pace is slow, tourist numbers remain modest, and visitors mostly encounter locals coming to shop at the market or travellers in transit towards the south of the country.

What to see and do in Maubisse

The Pousada de Maubisse

Built during the Portuguese colonial period, the Pousada stands at the top of the town's highest hill. The white, sturdy building dominates the entire valley and offers an unobstructed view of the surrounding landscape. Its status has evolved over the years (official residence, lodging, guesthouse project); enquire locally to find out its current use.

Igreja de Saint-Matthieu Church

Maubisse's church blends Timorese architecture with Portuguese influence. It is a central landmark for the local Catholic community; attending a service allows you to hear chants in Tetum and Mambai, which punctuate the region's religious life.

The weekly market

Maubisse's market is one of the most active on the highlands. You'll find local coffee, seasonal fruits and vegetables, hand-woven textiles and Mambai handicrafts. It's also the main meeting point for inhabitants of the surrounding villages.

Coffee plantations

Coffee has been cultivated in the region since Portuguese times and remains one of the main economic resources. Several family plantations welcome visitors to explain picking, drying and sorting of beans. Tasting generally takes place in simple conditions, directly at the producers' homes.

Hiking in the hills

Trails around Maubisse cross plantations, small Mambai villages and ridges offering panoramic views of the central valleys. No formal waymarking exists: it is advisable to go with a local guide, who also facilitates interaction with locals.

When to go

Temperatures in Maubisse range between 20 °C and 25 °C during the day, and drop to 16 °C at night. Bring a fleece or lightweight jacket, especially in the dry season.

• Dry season (May to November): most favourable period. Roads are passable, trails are dry, and visibility is clear over the landscapes.
• Rainy season (December to April): showers make some tracks muddy and complicate hiking, but the hills are intensely green.

How to get there

Maubisse is about 3 hours' drive south of Dili. Several options are available:

• Personal car or rental: a small 4x4 such as a RAV4 is sufficient, and a scooter is feasible for experienced riders. The new road that runs through Manleuana along the Comoro river allows you to arrive near the fruit market before Aileu in around 2 hours. Follow signs indicating Dare or Aileu, as the route to Maubisse is rarely signposted directly.
• Anggunas: these open yellow trucks depart from Taibessi market terminal in Dili and pass through Aileu. They only leave once full.
• Buses: buses heading to Same (pronounced SAH-may) or Suai also serve Maubisse. Tell the driver where you want to get off.

For the return journey, most departures from Maubisse to Dili take place early in the morning. Enquire the day before at your accommodation or at the market.

Practical information

• Accommodation: supply remains limited. A few guesthouses and community-run homestays are concentrated around the town centre and at the foot of the Pousada hill.
• Meals: small warungs around the market and simple dining in accommodations. Try the local coffee and preparations based on corn and beans, typical of the highlands.
• Money: plan for cash (US dollars, East Timor's official currency). ATMs are rare outside Dili.
• Equipment: hiking shoes, warm evening clothes, torch, sufficient drinking water.
• Language: Tetum and Portuguese are the official languages; Mambai is widely spoken in the region.

Nearby

Maubisse is a convenient stop for exploring central and southern East Timor. To the south, the road leads to Same, Ainaro, then the south coast and its deserted beaches. Further east, Mount Ramelau (Tatamailau), the country's highest peak at 2,986 metres, is traditionally climbed at night to reach the summit at sunrise.
