Capital of the Manggarai district, Ruteng lies between Labuan Bajo and the town of Moni, in the western part of Flores island. While less known to tourists and lacking major tourist infrastructure, Ruteng boasts exceptional landscapes. Nestled amid a mountain range, Ruteng sits at over 1,200 meters altitude. The climate is pleasant and cool. Temperatures typically range between 17°C at night and 25°C during the day.

Ruteng has approximately 34,569 inhabitants. As the seat of a Catholic diocese, most residents are Catholic.

Ruteng is a small town developing its tourism sector thanks to its magnificent spider web-shaped rice terraces, traditional villages, waterfalls, and lakes.

The region around Ruteng ranks among Indonésie's most important coffee-producing zones and Flores' leading rice producer. Its agricultural landscape is defined by numerous spider web-shaped rice terraces near the village of Cancar.

Ruteng has limited lodging options for travelers. However, you'll find several excellent restaurants and warungs in the southern part of town. The best place to stay is the Catholic convent Kongregasi Santa Maria. In a deeply spiritual and religious atmosphere, the nuns are exceptionally welcoming and offer comfortable rooms.

Rice Terraces Around Ruteng

The rice terraces surrounding Ruteng are divided into plots shaped like spider webs—a distinctive feature of Manggarai culture. The harvest season ends in November, transforming the terraces from verdant green to golden hues. Located 17 km by scooter from Ruteng, the traditional village of Cancar remains an essential stop to appreciate these rice terraces.

Some are carved into the slopes of Golo Curu hill, a mountain at the northern edge of Ruteng.

Caci

The culture of Ruteng's inhabitants is deeply rooted in tradition. These traditions are well preserved and woven into daily life. Regarded as a sacred dance, Caci is performed during the most important moments in residents' lives—weddings, New Year celebrations, and the Hang Woja festival. Caci is a traditional combat dance accompanied by gongs, drums, and chanting.

Labuan Bojo Catholic Church

Ruteng's cathedral is the city's principal architectural monument. It features modest Western-style architecture topped by two red bell towers on either side.

Ruteng Pu'u Village

Located 4 km from Ruteng, the traditional village of Ruteng Pu'u is perfect for hiking. Here too, rituals play a central role in residents' culture and daily life. Visitors can witness the ritual celebration of compang Manggaraian, often performed in the village center around a typical stone altar.

Tengkulese Waterfall

Also known as Cunca Lega, Tengkulese Waterfall nestles within lush forest. It's a two-tiered cascade. Like Ruteng Pu'u village, it's an important trekking destination. Framed by majestic hills, these idyllic landscapes await admiration and appreciation.

Leang Bua Caves

Just 30 minutes north of the city, the Leang Bua caves are prehistoric cavities. During archaeological excavations in 2003, homo floresiensis fossils were discovered here. An ancestor of Flores' peoples, this species once inhabited the caves and dominated surrounding valleys. Those interested in the region's historical past can visit the adjacent museum, located 50 meters from the caves. The museum houses a replica of a homo floresiensis skeleton, with the original housed in Jakarta.

Ranamese Lake

Located 21 km from town, Ranamese Lake, formed by a volcanic crater, ranks among Ruteng's finest natural attractions. Serene and tranquil, it supports impressive biodiversity.

Bus

Ruteng is accessible via the Transflores highway. Daily buses from major Flores cities such as Larantuka, Maumere, Ende, Bajawa, and Labuan Bajo regularly pass through Ruteng. From Labuan Bajo, 140 km away, the journey takes approximately 5 hours. From Ende, expect around 10 hours of travel.

Plane

Ruteng is also accessible via Frans Sales Lega Airport. Several airlines regularly operate connections to other Indonésie cities including Benteng, Kupang, Waingapu, Denpasar, and Ende.
