Senaru is a village located in the north of Lombok island. It is best known as the main gateway to Mount Rinjani, Indonesia's second-highest peak, standing at 3,726 meters above sea level. Yet this locality offers far more than that. Hidden in its surroundings are exceptional attractions, such as the fabulous Tiu Kelep waterfall and the stunning Pergasingan ridge. It's a destination worth visiting even if you don't plan to conquer the mighty Mount Rinjani.

What to Do in Senaru?

Visit the Bukit Selong Viewpoint

About 50 minutes by car from Senaru lies the Bukit Selong viewpoint, famous for its star-shaped bamboo platform. This vantage point allows you to capture beautiful photographs, with colorful valley fields and verdant hills as your backdrop. It's one of Senaru's most visited attractions.

See Sendang Gile Waterfall

Sendang Gile waterfall is located not far from the village. Standing 50 meters high and surrounded by lush vegetation, it captivates with its striking beauty. Marvel at Tiu Kelep Waterfall

Tiu Kelep waterfall is the most picturesque cascade on Lombok. Located a 15-minute walk from Sendang Gile, it requires descending the river and often walking through its riverbed. Once there, you'll be greeted by an incredible amphitheater of lush vegetation and mist, at the heart of which tumble the falls. Beyond admiring this natural wonder, you can also cool off in its waters.

Discover Pergasingan Ridge

Pergasingan ridge is renowned for offering some of Lombok's finest panoramic views. Accessible after a hike of roughly two hours, it rises to approximately 1,700 meters elevation. This site is also favored for its spectacular sunrises and sunsets, with breathtaking vistas across rice paddies and traditional villages, with Mount Rinjani looming in the background. It's an extraordinary camping spot, far from the crowds.

Witness a Peresean

Peresean, also known as Perisean, is a spectacular martial tradition unique to Lombok. This ancestral practice, deeply rooted in Sasak culture, features two fighters called Pepadu who engage in ritualized combat using rattan sticks (Penjalin) and thick buffalo-hide shields (Ende). Peresean fights often take place in Senaru. You can ask your hotel when the next matches will be held. Be warned—the spectacle is intensely violent!

Trek Mount Rinjani

Mount Rinjani is an attraction that belongs on every adventurer's bucket list. The trek, typically lasting two nights and three days, will impress you throughout the journey. Beyond reaching the summit, where you'll enjoy breathtaking panoramas stretching to Mount Gunung Agung in Bali, you'll also discover the volcano's crater lake and its active cone, Barujari. The mountain is accessible from April through January.

Hike the Senaru Crater Rim

Trekking to Mount Rinjani's summit is a serious challenge. If you're seeking a more accessible adventure while still enjoying spectacular scenery, choose the Senaru Crater Rim trail, which ascends to the volcano's crater without reaching the peak. This trek takes two days and one night.

When to Visit Senaru?

The best time to visit Senaru is during the dry season, from May to September. Weather conditions are generally more stable during this period, making it easier to access hiking trails and attractions such as the Sendang Gile and Tiu Kelep waterfalls.

To reach Senaru from Mataram, the island's capital, or from Senggigi/Kuta, most visitors opt for a private car or taxi. No buses connect Mataram to the village directly; buses stop at Bayan.

From Bali

If you're in Bali, take a fast ferry from Padang Bai or Serangan ports to Lembar on Lombok. From Lembar, take a taxi or rent a car to reach Senaru.

Another option to reach Senaru from Bali is to fly to Lombok airport (Praya) from Denpasar. Then take a taxi or rent a car to arrive at the village.
