History
Gorontalo is one of Sulawesi's oldest cities. It served as the center for the spread of Islam across the island under the dominion of Ternate, one of Indonésie's oldest Muslim kingdoms. The kingdom of Gorontalo, composed of 17 small groups called linula, converted to Islam in the 16th century under the leadership of Sultan Amai. Dutch control began in 1677. This led to the establishment of a trading post of the Dutch East India Company in 1705, and the construction of Fort Nassare in 1770.
On the eve of the Japanese Empire's invasion of the region during World War II, an uprising was led in Gorontalo by Nani Wartabone, who proclaimed Indonesian independence on January 23, 1942 as part of the Merah Putih (red and white) movement—nearly three years before Sukarno officially declared it. Nevertheless, the revolt was crushed by the Japanese Imperial Navy, which took control of Sulawesi and eastern Indonésie.
The city of Gorontalo separated from Gorontalo Regency in 1957 after obtaining kotapraja status (a second-tier urban administrative division in Indonésie). It took part in the Permesta secessionist movement between 1957 and 1961.
In 2000, Gorontalo became the capital of the newly formed Gorontalo Province.
Gorontalo Today

The tourism sector has been gradually recovering following the COVID-19 pandemic. The city welcomed 679 foreign tourists in 2022, compared to 3,720 in 2019.
