History

Bukit Lawang literally means "the gate of the hill." Its name is explained by its proximity to the Mount Leuser National Park, right at the foot of the mountain.

On November 2, 2003, Bukit Lawang was struck by a devastating flood. According to witnesses, water levels reached up to 20 meters in height, sweeping everything in its path. This catastrophe, caused by illegal forest exploitation, had a major impact on the local tourism industry. Indeed, approximately 400 houses, 3 mosques, 8 bridges, 280 shops, 35 hotels and guesthouses were decimated by the flood. It was not until 2004, after 8 months of reconstruction, that Bukit Lawang was able to welcome travelers again.
