Lombok: Mt Rinjani Summit Trek & Surroundings

Upon arrival at Lombok Airport, meet your English-speaking guide and transfer to Sembalun Lawang, a peaceful highland village surrounded by vast plantations and dramatic rolling hills. After settling into your guesthouse, enjoy some free time to soak in the tranquil atmosphere.

Your adventure begins with the first stage of the ascent of Mount Rinjani (3,726 m), Indonesia’s second-highest volcano.

The trail starts gently, crossing farmland and cultivated fields before transitioning into a historic route, remnants of an abandoned road project now reclaimed by nature. Scenic bridges spanning ancient lava flows add a unique charm to the hike.

As you gain altitude, the terrain becomes steeper and more demanding. After passing several trekking posts, the climb intensifies, testing both stamina and determination. The final push of the day rewards you with breathtaking views over the Segara Anak crater lake, far below.

Camp is set at Sembalun Rim (2,658 m), perched along the crater edge, a spectacular location overlooking the volcanic landscape.

Before dawn, begin your summit attempt. The climb quickly becomes challenging as the trail turns into loose volcanic scree above 3,000 meters.

The final ascent is a true test: steep, exhausting, and relentless, one step forward, half a step back. At high altitude, every breath counts. But reaching the summit at sunrise is an unforgettable reward.

From the top, witness a surreal panorama over Lombok, Bali, and the surrounding islands, as the first light transforms the volcanic landscape into a canvas of shifting colors.

After soaking in the moment, descend back to camp before continuing down toward the Segara Anak crater lake. The trail is steep and technical but leads to one of Indonesia’s most iconic settings.

The crater lake area, while stunning, shows signs of human impact due to pilgrimages. However, nearby Aik Kalak hot springs offer a rewarding natural escape.

After a short hike, reach these thermal pools, some too hot, others perfect for a relaxing soak beneath small cascading waterfalls.

Later, begin your trek north via Goa Susu (“Milk Cave”) toward Torean, where your vehicle awaits to transfer you back to Sembalun.

This morning, transfer to the natural hot springs of Sebau, the perfect recovery after your trek. Continue toward the scenic rice terraces of Sapit, where you’ll enjoy a gentle walk through lush green landscapes blending agriculture and mountain scenery.

• Walk: 2–3 hours

Head to Tetebatu, a fertile and tranquil region at the foot of Mount Rinjani. Embark on a short jungle trek to discover the hidden Jeruk Manis Waterfall, a stunning cascade tucked deep within tropical forest, ideal for a refreshing swim.

End the day in the peaceful village of Kembang Kuning.

In the morning, transfer to Tetebatu, a fertile and scenic region at the foothills of Mount Rinjani. From here, set off on a short trek through lush tropical landscapes to discover the hidden Jeruk Manis Waterfall (“Sweet Orange” waterfall). Nestled deep within dense jungle, this spectacular cascade offers the perfect setting for a refreshing swim in nature.

At the end of the day, continue your journey toward the peaceful village of Kembang Kuning, surrounded by greenery and traditional rural life.

Enjoy a full day at leisure on the island. Take the opportunity to explore at your own pace, whether on foot or by bicycle, and discover the island’s most tranquil beaches, as well as its charming seaside cafés and beach bars.

Grab your mask and snorkel and head straight from the shore to explore the vibrant underwater world. The Gili Islands are home to abundant marine life, including colorful fish and, very likely, sea turtles, the island’s most iconic and ancient residents.
