History

The name Harau Valley derives from the word "rauk," meaning hoarse or ragged. The residents of Bukit Jambu frequently faced flooding and landslides. These disasters often sparked panic within the community. Terrified villagers had a habit of shouting hysterically, causing their voices to become hoarse. Over time, the area became known as "Orau," after the characteristic voice of its inhabitants. Later, "Orau" transformed into "Arau."

Today

Harau Valley is located in the district of the same name, in West Sumatra. It is fertile land, surrounded by colored granite stones that can rise to heights of 500 meters. It is home to numerous natural attractions, each more captivating than the last.

Note, for example, the Aka Barayun waterfalls, as well as those at Sarasah Aie Luluih, Sarasah Murai, Sarasah Bunta and Sarasah Aie Angek, each with their own distinctive character. Notably, the Luluih waterfall is renowned for its beautiful natural pool, while Sarasah Murai stands out for its tranquil atmosphere, accompanied by the melodious song of birds refreshing themselves in its waters. As for Sarasah Aie Angek, this waterfall delivers water at a notably warm temperature.

Harau Valley offers breathtaking landscapes, alternating waterfalls with lush rice paddies and impressive cliffs. In the luxuriant jungle bordering the valley, discover exceptional wildlife including tapirs, black monkeys, bear cubs, goats and even tigers.

Harau Valley is also a playground for seasoned climbers. You'll find no fewer than 300 climbing sites. You'll be spoiled for choice among the numerous rock faces scattered throughout the region. Equally, the valley proves to be an excellent hiking destination, particularly for discovering waterfalls hidden within forests and the small surrounding villages.

Climate

Like all regions of West Sumatra, Harau Valley enjoys a tropical climate with two well-defined seasons. The dry season runs from May through September, while the wet season spans October through April. To make the most of your stay in this region, plan your visit during the dry season.

Harau Valley is located 45 km northeast of Bukittinggi. To reach it, regardless of your starting point, first make your way to Bukittinggi. Once you arrive in the city, take the bus to Payakumbuh. From there, board a minibus that leads to the village of Harau.
