Perched at approximately 1,100 meters altitude, Sembalun, also known as Sembalun Lawang, is the highest village on the island of Lombok. It serves as one of two starting points for climbing the famous Mount Rinjani, the other being the village of Senaru. It is often overlooked by adventurers. Yet the surrounding area is filled with exciting excursions and exceptional natural wonders waiting to be discovered.

What to do in Sembalun Lawang?

Hike to Pergasingan

Pergasingan is a hill that overlooks the Sembalun Lawang valley. Standing at approximately 1,750 meters altitude, it requires between 1 and 3 hours of hiking on a trail with over 600 meters of elevation gain.

Pergasingan is one of the best attractions in the Sembalun region. At the summit, you will be rewarded with one of the most stunning panoramas that Lombok island has to offer. We recommend tackling this hill at sunrise to enjoy the most magnificent views.

See Mangku Sakti Waterfall

The Mangku waterfall displays an impressive 20-meter-high curtain of water fed by powerful rapids downstream. It flows year-round, even during the dry season. Visitors can venture behind its curtain to marvel at its power. To reach this hidden gem of Lombok, you need a 45-minute motorbike ride followed by a 15-minute walk from Sembalun.

Visit Bukit Selong Ricefield Viewpoint

Many viewpoints can be found throughout the Sembalun region. But if you wish to enjoy picturesque views without expending too much energy, head to Bukit Selong Ricefield, located behind a river on the village's outskirts. You'll enjoy incredible views of the village's rice terraces. Note, however, that an entrance fee of 5,000 rupees is required to access it. This money helps support the local community, affected by earthquakes.

Discover Taman Wisata Pusuk Viewpoint

Another popular viewpoint in Sembalun is Taman Wisata Pusuk. Located near the road, it requires minimal walking. A small observation platform for taking superb photos has been built there. On site, you can also admire the Sembalun valley and the imposing volcanic hills surrounding it.

Admire the Strawberry Fields

The region's volcanic soils are ideal for strawberry cultivation. The road leading to Taman Wisata Pusuk passes through spectacular strawberry fields. Villagers sell freshly picked fruit along the roadside. You can purchase some to enjoy once you reach the viewpoint.

Trek Mount Rinjani

Mount Rinjani is the number-one attraction on Lombok island. The village of Sembalun offers the easiest access to this majestic volcano, Indonesia's second-highest peak, standing at 3,726 meters altitude. From its summit, you'll have breathtaking views of its crater, lake, and the island of Bali. Moreover, the trek is punctuated by various natural treasures, such as waterfalls.

When to Visit Sembalun?

The best time to visit Sembalun village is during the dry season, from May to September. During this period, the weather is generally dry and sunny, ideal for exploring the natural beauty of the surrounding area, including Mount Rinjani. Temperatures are pleasant and favorable for hiking and other outdoor activities.

Sembalun Lawang village is a 3-hour drive from the airport and Kuta. It is not served by any public transportation. You must get there on your own, by hiring a travel company, or by renting a car or motorbike.

Sembalun or Senaru?

If you're hesitant between these two villages for settling in before undertaking the climb up Mount Rinjani, know that most visitors opt for Senaru, renowned for its panoramic views of the Sendang Gile and Tiu Kelep waterfalls. It offers an enriching pre-trek experience. Conversely, Sembalun Lawang is often chosen for a quicker descent after reaching the volcano's summit.
