About the Island

Located off the north-west coast of Bali, Menjangan Island—or Deer Island—stands as one of Indonésie's finest natural treasures. It forms part of the West Bali National Park, making it a protected zone. Access is carefully controlled and monitored. Yet it's still possible to join a day excursion. On the island itself, apart from rangers protecting the reserve, there are no permanent human residents. A handful of divers and families seeking a picnic spot can visit for the day. The only permanent inhabitants are herds of deer introduced centuries ago, which gave the island its name: menjangan means "deer" in Indonesian.

Surrounded by magnificent coral reefs, this island is a true paradise for diving enthusiasts. Diving conditions are optimal: minimal current, water temperatures between 27 and 30°C, and visibility reaching up to 50 metres. Menjangan is also renowned for hosting Bali's most spectacular walls. Its drop-offs plunge 20 to 60 metres deep and showcase incredible marine plant diversity, including gorgonias (soft coral).

While visiting Menjangan Island, don't miss the Kapal Budak wreck site. This is the remains of a ship that transported enslaved people in the early 19th century. The vessel, or what remains of it, is anchored by two anchors—the first at 6 metres depth and the second at 32 metres.

How to Reach Menjangan Island?
