Echoes of the Past

Cipanas, formerly spelled Tjipanas, means "hot water." This is the name given to a small thermal spring village that later became a celebrated tourist destination.

Blessed with favorable climatic conditions, the locality became a privileged retreat for the Dutch seeking comfort and wellness. Enchanted by the town, they built a permanent residence and named it Istana Cipanas. Construction of the property was completed in 1740 by Van Heots and then renovated in 1743 by colonial governors, who added spa and wellness centers.

Today

Spanning 58.3 hectares, the town sits at 1,080 meters altitude in the heart of Mount Gede. According to the 2010 census, Cipanas has 15,435 inhabitants, the majority of whom are Muslim Sundanese.

The locality has preserved its natural charm to this day. Flora and fauna exist in harmony with the local population. Wildlife such as the Javan slow loris and silvery gibbons live peacefully within their ecosystems.

Cipanas is located 86 km south of Jakarta. From the capital, the fastest route passes through Bogor. During weekdays, the journey takes approximately one and a half hours. Weekend and holiday traffic can be heavy, making the drive considerably longer.
