History

The story of Wamena is closely bound to the history of religious development in the central part of Papua Province. More precisely, it begins on June 23, 1938, when American explorer Richard Archbold discovers a magnificent valley through his aircraft window. It was Baliem Valley, and June 23, 1938 marked its opening to the world. Indeed, that very day, they decided to land near Lake Habema to reach the valley and establish a base camp. Later, on April 20, 1954, other missionaries joined them to spread the gospel to the valley's inhabitants.

The first missionary station was established at Hitigima, near an airstrip. But a few months later, the missionaries found a better location for their aircraft. This place was in the area where the Mukoko tribe lived. Over the years, this airstrip developed and modernised to become the present-day Wamena Airport. In 1995, Dutch troops landed in Wamena, establishing the region's first government post. Thus, December 10, 1955 is recognised as the official date of the city's founding.

Today

Wamena is a small town home to just over 10,000 people from across the Indonesian archipelago. Due to its geographical location in the highlands of Baliem Valley, it is only accessible by air. The good news is that the city has an airport and is served very regularly by flights from the largest cities in the archipelago.

Despite being nearly cut off from the world, Wamena is a rather popular tourist destination. This is because it is the only town in Papua's central mountains, and it provides access to the entire valley and the diverse ethnic groups living there, some of whom have barely emerged from the Stone Age.

Wamena is also renowned for its traditional market, where numerous tribes, notably the Dani, Lani and Yali, gather to sell their agricultural products as well as handicrafts. Visiting this place allows you to discover and immerse yourself in the daily life of these peoples of Baliem Valley.

Climate

Situated at 1,500 metres above sea level, temperatures in Wamena can be cool at night and very warm during the day.

Due to its geographical location in the highlands of Baliem Valley, Wamena is only accessible by air from the rest of Indonésie. It is approximately 45 minutes by plane from Jayapura, the provincial capital.
