Ascent from Kledung (south)

Recommended for hikers in excellent physical condition

The route starting from Kledung is the most frequented. It takes approximately 5 to 6 hours to reach the summit. The climb begins with a paved road that gradually rises up the hillside for approximately 1.5 km. It is possible to reach the end of this section, located at 1,654 m, by motorbike taxi.

The trail, well marked but sometimes slippery, then crosses a pine forest. You pass successively through the remains of post 1 (1,761 m), Payungan post (1,813 m), then a few small wooden bridges before reaching the remains of a shelter at post 2 (1,995 m).

Several viewpoints allow you to observe Mount Sumbing, on the other side of the Kledung pass. After Batu Longko, vegetation becomes sparser as you approach post 3 (2,337 m), the first major camping area. If you do not sleep at the summit, this site is a suitable location, with clear views to the south and east and enough space to set up several tents. Other areas also allow camping throughout the ascent.

The trail then becomes steeper and crosses rocky areas, particularly at Batu Tatah (2,843 m). Shade is rare on this section, which requires good sun protection. You finally reach the summit, marked by the crater rim, after 5 to 6 hours of hiking.

The descent to Kledung Pass can be completed in less than 4 hours for the fastest hikers.

This itinerary offers varied progression with wide panoramic views over tea plantations, the Dieng plateau and hills located north of Sindoro. Allow approximately 3h30 to 4h30 for the ascent and 2h30 to 3h30 for the descent. The base camp is situated around 1,700 m altitude, while the trail departure begins slightly higher, at 1,791 m.

The path first crosses tea plantations passing through several posts, notably Bayangan post (1,865 m), post 1 (Kebun Teh, 1,889 m) and post 2 (Kebun Teh, 2,066 m). These installations correspond to former shelters used for weighing tea.

From Patok Besi (2,168 m), marking the end of the plantations, the trail enters a pleasant forest. You then reach post 3 (Watu Tulis, 2,422 m), identifiable by a large carved rock, before reaching the post 3 bivouac area (2,519 m), considered the most suitable location for spending the night.

From this camp, the view opens onto surrounding relief, notably Mount Sigandul, called locally Puncak Setlerep (2,098 m), as well as a neighboring summit to the east (2,142 m).

Progress continues towards post 4 (Ladang Batu 1, 2,734 m), where the terrain becomes more technical with steep rocky sections and views of Batu Susu. The trail remains challenging and sometimes slippery until the passage of Ladang Batu 2 (Batu Tangga, 3,024 m). You finally reach the savanna area (3,121 m), located near the summit plateau.

Itinerary starting from Bansari (east)

The base camp begins at a lower altitude (1 076 m), but it is generally possible to reach post 1 by motorbike taxi using the plantation track, in approximately 20 minutes. Allow 4 to 5 hours for the ascent (5 to 6 hours without motorbike taxi) and 3 to 4 hours for the descent (4 to 5 hours without motorbike taxi).

The trail successively crosses the Bayangan post, then post 1 Sidempul (1 575 m), where there is an entrance and a water source. You continue towards post 2 Turunan (1 870 m), then post 3 Tunggangan (2 154 m), located near a water source on the right, before reaching several flat areas suitable for bivouacking.

The itinerary continues towards post 4 Bukit Soma (2 292 m), an observation point offering clear views of the Sumbing, Merbabu and Lawu volcanoes, particularly in the early morning light. You then pass through the Ojek post (2 392 m), which is not part of the official numbering.

Beyond 2 550 m altitude, the vegetation becomes lower and the panoramas open up further. You then reach an appreciated bivouacking area, marked by a large bamboo pole (2 664 m). Post 5 Mlelan (2 710 m) is generally reached approximately 3 hours after post 1.

After an additional hour of walking, you reach post 6 Centong (3 086 m). The trail then becomes steeper and progress slows. From this point, the path forks to the left and overlooks a large cut into the mountainside. Five minutes further, you reach the Bansari sign (3 132 m).

This route offers sustained progression with significant elevation gain. Plan for approximately 8 hours of hiking for the entire route, with continuous ascent through varied terrain.
