With a diameter of over 2 kilometers, Mount Raung has the largest crater in Java. It is one of the most isolated and least-climbed peaks of volcanoes over 3,000 meters in altitude, which means there is not much litter on the trails and you can escape civilization during your climb. Many catch a glimpse of the immense and impressive crater of Raung from the air, as planes connecting Java to Bali fly over it. The last eruption of Mt Raung dates back to 2015, but there have been no dangerous eruptions for several decades.
There are two main routes to climb Mt Raung. The most popular route starts from the north, at Sumberwringin. This trek can be completed in two days. However, those who wish to reach the true summit of the volcano, Puncak Sejati, must begin the ascent from around Kalibaru and be prepared to spend two nights on the volcano's slopes, as well as to tackle some short rope climbing sections.
Note: The two routes are not connected, so it is not possible to climb one route and descend by the other.
Ascent from the Kalibaru area and towards Sejati Peak
Recommended for hikers in excellent physical condition
The summit of Mount Raung's crater, Sejati Peak, previously required a week to reach, but it is now possible to reach it in three long days. Your guide will provide you with helmets, ropes and all the basic equipment needed to tackle the difficult sections on day 2.

Approach Route
Kalibaru → Wonorejo
Early departure at 6am heading towards the village of Wonorejo.
You then continue your route on difficult and muddy terrain to post 1, located at 896 meters altitude. This point marks the starting point for the majority of hikers. On site, a simple warung set up in the heart of the coffee plantations is run by Pak Sunarya, originally from Madura, and his wife. A little further down, in clear weather, you enjoy a clear view of Raung volcano. From this post, the summit is still approximately 10 km as the crow flies.
The trail begins with a gradual and pleasant slope. Along the way, you move through a living forest, marked by the beating of wings of hornbills and the quieter sounds of wild boar. With a little attention, you can also observe small indigo flycatchers.
You reach camp 2 (1,451 m) in less than two hours. Then allow approximately 30 minutes to reach camp 3 (1,638 m), then a further 45 minutes to reach camp 4 (1,815 m). Camp 5 (2,045 m) is reached in 45 minutes, followed by camp 6 (2,222 m), located near seismological equipment, accessible in a similar time frame.
Finally, you reach camp 7 (2,553 m), set on a pleasant ridge. This site provides a suitable location for your two nights of camping. You should plan between 6 and 7 hours of hiking, including breaks, to reach it.
From this point, views open up to Argopuro and Semeru volcanoes, with enough space to set up several tents.
Summit ascent
Wonorejo → Raung
You begin the summit ascent before 4am to make the most of daylight. After just over an hour of hiking, you reach camp 8 (2,870 m), then camp 9 (3,068 m) in a further 45 minutes to 1 hour. The trail continues through forest but regularly opens onto panoramic views of Argopuro to the west, Mount Agung in Bali to the east, as well as Glenmore peak on the crater's edge.
Approximately 2 hours after leaving camp 7, you reach the end of vegetation (3,115 m), then, a few minutes later, Puncak Bendera (3,139 m), identifiable by its Indonesian flag. This viewpoint allows you to observe the surrounding volcanoes and better understand the more technical sections leading to Puncak Sejati.
The ascent to Puncak Sejati (optional) requires approximately 3 additional hours. You progress along narrow ridges with steep slopes, unstable scree, and several short sections requiring the use of ropes. After an initial exposed section, you reach Puncak 17 (3,172 m), a marked peak, before continuing towards Puncak Tusuk Gigi (3,315 m), recognizable by its rock slabs. The route demands attention and coordination, particularly on certain rocky sections.
You finally reach Puncak Sejati, around 3,330 m altitude. From this summit, views open widely onto the Raung crater and surrounding volcanoes. After this stage, you begin the descent towards Puncak Bendera, which takes approximately 2.5 hours to reach, then count less than 2 additional hours to return to camp 7.

Allow approximately 6 hours of descent to reach post 1, where your vehicle awaits for transfer to your hotel.

Passport
To enter Indonesia, your passport must be valid for a minimum of six months after your entry date and must contain at least two blank pages for immigration stamps.

The authorities may also request:
an exit ticket from the territory (return or onward flight),
proof of sufficient financial resources for the duration of your stay.
Formalities on arrival
Before your arrival, it is recommended to complete the online arrival declaration via the official Indonesian customs and immigration portal (e-CD, Electronic Customs Declaration).
This form allows you to transmit to the authorities certain information necessary for entry into the territory:

A confirmation QR code may be requested when passing through customs and immigration controls.
Health and vaccinations
No vaccine is mandatory to enter Indonesia, except in case of transit through a country at risk of yellow fever, in which case an international vaccination certificate may be required.
As a precaution, it is advisable to consult a doctor or vaccination center before departure. Vaccinations against hepatitis A, hepatitis B, typhoid and rabies are commonly recommended for stays in Indonesia. Antimalarial treatment may also be recommended depending on the regions visited (particularly outside Bali and major cities).
Travel with children
Minors must hold their own valid passport covering the duration of the stay.
In some countries, when a minor travels without one of their parents, an authorization to exit the territory may be required according to the regulations of the country of residence.
