Java & Bali: A Volcano Odyssey

Upon arrival at Jakarta airport, you’ll receive a warm welcome before being transferred to your hotel.

In the evening, enjoy a friendly dinner along with a detailed trip briefing to kick off your adventure.

Head towards Carita, where you’ll visit the historic Cikoneng lighthouse, built in 1885. Continue your adventure with a visit to the Krakatau observatory in Pasauran, where you’ll get a close look at the seismic activity of this legendary volcano.

Mid-morning, transfer to the village harbor and board a speedboat heading toward the iconic Krakatoa volcano. You’ll circle the island at a safe distance, depending on current volcanic activity. Since the major eruption of December 2018, Anak Krakatau remains highly active and unpredictable. The day ends with a bivouac at the foot of the volcano or on a nearby island, an unforgettable experience

The morning is dedicated to exploring the Krakatoa volcano and its surroundings. Depending on volcanic activity, you may hike along the slopes of the old cone to observe the new one, formed in 2021 and still frequently erupting. A swim in the sea may also be possible.

In the afternoon, return to Carita, then transfer back to Jakarta.

Depart for Bandung, nicknamed the Paris of Java, set at 768 m altitude and surrounded by majestic volcanoes. Visit the Geological Museum and the Indonesian Volcanology Center. Then head to Tangkuban Perahu volcano, where you can walk along the active crater rim and admire breathtaking landscapes.

Late afternoon transfer to your hotel for a relaxing evening.

Head to Papandayan volcano, crossing a dramatic volcanic chain. Nearby, the steaming geysers of Kamojang crater create a surreal atmosphere. A hike allows you to explore bubbling mud pools, steam vents, and sulfur deposits, clear signs of geothermal activity. Continue to the Kamojang geothermal center before transferring to your hotel.

Morning transfer to Galunggung volcano for a hike around its crater. You’ll learn about the devastating 1982 eruptions, when massive lahars forced over 30,000 people to evacuate. In the evening, transfer to Baturaden, a resort nestled at the foot of Mount Slamet.

Enjoy a scenic hike through authentic villages, rice terraces, rivers, and lush tropical forests. Afterward, relax in natural hot springs, with the option of a sulfur mud reflexology massage by a local therapist.

Afternoon transfer to Wonosobo.

Wonosobo sits on the slopes of the extinct Perahu volcano, surrounded by tea and tobacco plantations. Morning walk through these fertile landscapes to Lake Menjer (1,200 m), where you’ll observe local life. Quick visit to the Dieng Plateau, then transfer to Magelang.

Morning hike through rice terraces to the hidden Selogryo temple, rediscovered in 1835. Continue through forest trails, villages, and plantations. Then marvel at Borobudur, the largest Buddhist monument in the world. Afternoon transfer to Yogyakarta.

Explore Yogyakarta, visiting the Sultan’s Palace, Taman Sari Water Palace, and the bird market. Continue to the Merapi volcano observatory to learn about volcanic activity. Return to the hotel in the afternoon

This day is dedicated to studying the powerful Merapi volcano and the aftermath of its 2010 eruption. From a viewpoint at 1,200 m, observe the dramatic impacts of pyroclastic flows. Walk along the Gendol River, then visit the Merapi Museum and a refugee center. Continue to Prambanan, Indonesia’s largest Hindu temple

Visit Sukuh temple, known for its unique and symbolic carvings. Hike toward Tawangmangu village, exploring pine forests and plantations. End the walk at the Grojogan Sewu waterfall. Afternoon transfer to Tumpang near Mount Bromo.

Trekking time: approx. 4h (Elevation: +400 m / -300 m)

Explore the Tengger region by 4x4, crossing the Sea of Sand and volcanic ridges. Ascend Mount Bromo and admire its smoking crater. End the day at Mount Pananjakan for a stunning sunset over Bromo and Semeru.

Early morning 4x4 ride to Mount Pananjakan for sunrise over the caldera. Then head to Gunung Sawur, a key observation point for Semeru volcano. Afternoon transfer to Licin

Early ascent of Kawah Ijen, known for its turquoise acid lake and sulfur miners carrying up to 80 kg loads. Transfer to Ketapang port and ferry to Bali. Short drive to Pemuteran for a relaxing stay.

Transfer to Penelokan along Bali’s north coast to visit the Batur Volcano Museum. Enjoy panoramic views of the volcano’s dramatic landscape before returning to your hotel.
