Satonda Island, known as Pulau Satonda in Indonesian, is one of Indonésie's best-kept secrets. This slice of paradise with breathtaking scenery resembles a ring. Satonda is indeed formed by hills encircling a saltwater lake. It sits off the northern coast of Sumbawa Island, in the province of West Nusa Tenggara.

History

Satonda Island is of volcanic origin. It represents the visible portion of a majestic volcano that rises from the ocean. It may have formed during the last ice age, when sea levels were lower. Examination of its marine terraces and steep ravines suggests it has been inactive for several millennia.

The submerged portion of the Satonda volcano reaches approximately 1,000 meters in height, displaying the steep slope characteristic of tuff cones. Its caldera spans about 4 square kilometers. The walls of this immense basin form the island, rising up to 300 meters above sea level.

Once a freshwater crater lake, Satonda's basin filled with seawater in 1815, following the eruption of Mount Tambora on the neighboring island of Sumbawa. Satonda Island has no permanent residents, though a resort development project is underway.

When to Visit Satonda Volcano?

With its tropical climate, Satonda is pleasant to visit year-round. However, certain periods are more favorable depending on your preferred activities.

For diving enthusiasts, underwater visibility is optimal between May and September. You'll be able to fully appreciate the vast coral reef surrounding the island.

For nature lovers, plan your visit between February and May, during the rainy season, to witness lush and verdant flora. However, avoid January and February, when rainfall is heaviest.

From either of Sumbawa Island's two airports—Bima Airport or Sumbawa Besar Airport—head to Nangamiro village. Overland journeys take 6 and 7 hours respectively. Once in the village, rent a boat to reach Satonda Island. The crossing takes approximately 1 hour.
