Nestled amid lush rice paddies, Moni is a small village situated at the foot of Mount Kelimutu, on the island of Flores. Known as one of the region's most popular villages, it's also the ideal departure point for reaching the volcano's summit. Travelers who love exploring pristine nature will appreciate Moni's authentic atmosphere, punctuated by stunning natural landscapes.

Moni Today

The village of Moni is a crucial stop on the way to Kelimutu volcano. Its climate and the traditional culture of its inhabitants favor tourism. The region enjoys a tropical climate with increased rainfall in summer. July is the coldest month in the region, with temperatures hovering around 21°C.

Moni has approximately 28,200 inhabitants, and the majority of this population follows the Christian faith. The inhabitants, of indigenous origin, speak the Moni language, an heir to Austronesian languages. Don't hesitate to approach them and observe their daily life!

Moni boasts numerous accommodations. Most are located on the slopes of Mount Kelimutu and offer stunning views of the surrounding area. You'll find bungalows, guesthouses, hotels, and restaurants.

At the volcano's summit lie three lakes of different colors. This difference is notably due to minerals escaping from the crater.

It's possible to wander between rice paddies and take short hikes in the region. Moni's market is particularly worth visiting. It takes place every Monday. You'll find local artisans offering traditional products such as ikats, patterned fabrics originating from Flores.

Near Moni, close to the Ende road, the village of Wologai also provides access to Kelimutu volcano.

From the town of Ende, Riung, or Maumere, local buses connect to the village of Moni. Transportation costs are generally 50,000 IDR from Riung, 20,000 IDR from Ende (approximately two hours' drive), and 30,000 IDR from Maumere (three hours' drive).
