Medan is the capital of the province in the north of the island of Sumatra. This charming city has plenty to offer to attract holidaymakers on a trip to Indonesia.

History

The village of Kampung Medan was founded in the 16th century by Guru Patimbus Sembiring Pelawi, the grandson of the "priest-king" of the Toba Bataks. It takes its name from the holy city of Saudi Arabia, "Medina". However, for Indonesians, "Medan" means "field".

The Bataks were the first inhabitants of the village. Although divided into 6 groups, they shared common linguistic and cultural traits. In the 17th century, Medan was colonized by the Dutch. Since then, the village experienced growth thanks to the development of tobacco, tea and rubber cultivation. Until the end of the 19th century, Medan experienced uninterrupted growth, which rapidly made it an important economic center.

In 1915, Medan was elevated to the status of capital of the north of the island of Sumatra and received municipal status in 1918.

Today

With over 2.5 million inhabitants, Medan is the fourth most populous city in Indonesia. Thanks to the railway, the city experienced rapid expansion. Some economists believe it could become the world's sixth largest economy by 2030. In Medan, the most widely used languages are Indonesian and Batak.

Medan is home to countless sites and tourist attractions. Among the must-sees, note the Masjid Raya Al Mashun, or Medan's Great Mosque. Construction began in 1906 and was completed in 1909.
