In the heart of Java's landscape stands an exceptional destination in the Indonesian archipelago: Magelang. This city is best known for hosting one of Southeast Asia's most impressive architectural treasures: the ancient Buddhist temples of Borobudur. Its History

The entire city was founded in 907 under the name Mantyasih. Later, it was renamed Metesh. Magelang is an emblematic place in Indonesian history. Under the reign of King Balitung, the city became a fiscally exempt entity governed by a patih. During British colonial rule, it gained in importance, establishing major governmental institutions and infrastructure such as a water tower in 1918 and electricity in 1927. Dotted with notable military sites, Magelang is also marked by tragic events, notably allegations of forced prostitution by the Japanese military in 1944. After independence, it evolved administratively to become an influential city in modern Indonésie.

An excellent destination to visit, Magelang is a modern city that is both peaceful and welcoming. Head northwest of Yogyakarta, in Central Java province, and you'll find it. It is home to 121,675 residents on a land area of 18.54 km². Its position on the route to Semarang, the provincial capital, makes it an ideal place to visit. The landscape surrounded by the Merbabu and Sumbing volcanoes invites you to unwind. It owes its fame to its proximity to the Borobudur temples, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Many visitors come here to admire the sunrise just 12 km away.

Take a walk around the area, if only to discover historic sites such as the resident's mansion where Prince Diponegoro was arrested. A statue in his honor stands on the alun-alun, the city's main square.

Taste the local gastronomy and savor getuk, a sweet delicacy made from cassava, sugar and grated coconut.

Magelang is also home to notable institutions, such as a Roman Catholic seminary and a military academy.

The Climate

The climate in Magelang is generally pleasant. It is marked by an equatorial climate, typical of tropical regions. This translates into frequent rainfall and stable temperatures throughout the year.

When to Visit?

The best time to visit Magelang is generally outside the months of July and August to avoid crowds. The Buddhist Waisak festival in May or June makes Magelang very lively.

How to Get There?

Magelang is nestled in the heart of Central Java's volcanoes, approximately 43 km north of Yogyakarta train station and a comparable distance from the same city's airport. Buses regularly connect Yogyakarta, Magelang and Borobudur from Jombor terminal from morning until afternoon.

In Magelang, the main means of transportation are cars, motorcycles, buses, becak and bicycles. Cars and motorcycles are particularly popular as most households own a motorcycle for their daily commute. Public transportation is mainly provided by buses.
