Mount Bromo volcano ranks high among the must-see attractions to explore in Indonesie. This volcano, standing at 2,329 meters in height, is nothing less than the most visited volcano in the archipelago. It is located in East Java province, within the Bromo-Tengger-Semeru National Park. The Tengger caldera, in which Mount Bromo is situated, contains two other volcanic cones: Mount Batok and Mount Semeru.

The classic route followed by 99% of tourists consists of leaving Cemoro Lawang, the village closest to the volcano, around 4 in the morning to climb to the top of Mount Penanjakan. From there, it is possible to witness the sunrise over Mount Bromo (the sun rises around 5:30 a.m.). After this first stage, travelers descend into the caldera to reach Mount Bromo and leave the area in late morning.

The itinerary we offer at Azimuth Adventure Travel is deliberately against the grain of the route taken by the crowds, allowing you to fully enjoy the enchanting landscapes surrounding you and experience them in solitude. We do not do Mount Penanjakan and Bromo back-to-back, as most tour agencies suggest. We prefer to take you first to Mount Bromo, then the next day at dawn, admire it from afar from the top of Mount Penanjakan.

Mount Bromo Itinerary with Azimuth Adventure Travel

Day 1: Mount Bromo.

We depart in the morning from Tumpang, a small town located east of Malang. After crossing the national park by jeep or 4x4, we arrive at Cemoro Lawang late in the morning and have lunch there. We begin the trek to Mount Bromo after the meal, while most visitors have already left the area. We cross on foot the sea of sand that surrounds the volcanic cone, giving this landscape a lunar and timeless quality. Weather permitting, we complete the crater tour. Since the volcano is very active, it is common to see smoke emanating from it, sometimes releasing a strong sulfur odor. By undertaking this ascent in the afternoon, we avoid all the visitors, which guarantees us a discovery of the smoking crater in near solitude. For those who wish, remaining at the crater's edge until sunset offers magnificent colors with golden and orange hues on the volcano and caldera—a spectacle you won't soon forget. We return to the hotel at the end of the afternoon or after nightfall with the aid of headlamps.

Day 2: Penanjakan.

The sunrise over Mount Bromo from Mount Penanjakan is certainly a stunning spectacle, but it is highly popular with travelers and tour agencies. At this hour, you will likely have to jostle your way through crowds to observe Bromo's silhouette cut against the redness of dawn. A platform has been specially designed to welcome visitors and enjoy the panoramic view of the entire Tengger caldera and its volcanic cones and the village of Cemoro Lawang below.

We suggest going up by Jeep, but some prefer to set out before dawn to reach the viewpoint on foot and be among the first on site. The morning hike is not particularly challenging, and a portion of it is currently being renovated to facilitate the ascent with steps.

Upon arrival near the viewpoint, you will encounter a few shops and restaurants. You can then purchase hats, gloves, scarves and rent a warm coat on site if you hadn't planned ahead. These small shops are also perfect if you need a bite after the climb.

Difficulty level: Easy

Mount Bromo is accessible to all travelers. Not particularly high, its crater is served by stairs, making the ascent very easy. The ascent of Mount Penanjakan is also very easy, the path being wide and well maintained.

When to Visit Mount Bromo?

In theory, Bromo is doable at any time of year. However, by visiting during the dry season, from May to October, you run less risk of overcast skies and poor visibility. Avoid weekends if possible, to escape the crowds. If you wish to combine nature and culture, you can inquire about the date of the Hindu Kasada ceremony, which takes place from the 14th to the 16th of the Kasada month on the Javanese calendar. During this ceremony, to which all spectators are welcome, processions to Bromo are organized, and offerings (food, and sometimes live poultry) are thrown into the crater.

Our Tips for Discovering Mount Bromo

Pack warm clothing for the morning ascent of Mount Penanjakan, as temperatures at altitude in the morning are quite cool, and waiting on site can quickly chill you. A scarf or neck gaiter can also be very appreciated for the Bromo ascent to limit the impact of fumaroles and sulfur odor. These can also be very useful in the caldera to protect yourself from the wind that stirs up sand and ash.

Good hiking boots, preferably mid-cut or high-cut, are recommended to keep sand out of your shoes when walking in the caldera. They will also serve you well for both ascents.
