The spirit of travel
The Mount Rinjani is the second highest volcano in Indonésie (after the Kerinci volcano in Sumatra), and one of the most beautiful and popular treks in Asia. The volcanic complex, formerly known as Samalas, is now considered the site of a massive eruption in 1257, which caused climate changes around the world (the "Little Ice Age") and left the enormous caldera that you can see today. There are several routes to cross Mount Rinjani National Park. Most trekkers choose to start in the north, at Senaru and camp on the crater's edge with the most spectacular views of Lake Segara Anak (the Sea Child lake) and the new active volcano Barujari, which is about 200 years old. However, Sembalun, to the east, is the best starting point for trekkers who wish to reach the rocky summit.
The recommended trek is a 3-day and 2-night ascent, departing from Sembalun and towards Torean (the path to and from Senaru has been closed since the 2018 eruption). It is however possible to complete the ascent in 2 days and one night, as a round trip from Sembalun. On the other hand, if you wish to approach the smoking cone of Mt Barujari, it is better to camp an additional night by the lake and complete the ascent in 4 days and 3 nights.

Rinjani Volcano Climb
Walking tour
Recommended for experienced hikers
The first hour of walking takes you through rolling hills, through the heart of agricultural areas and vegetable fields. This section forms the most accessible part of the trek. After crossing a small stream, the trail follows an old road built as part of a road project initiated under President Suharto, connecting Sembalun Lawang to Rinjani crater lake. Abandoned due to lack of funding, this route has gradually been reclaimed by nature and today offers a pleasant itinerary, punctuated by bridges crossing former lava flows.
A short forest section appears around 1,220 meters altitude, but shade becomes scarce afterwards. You continue your progression through rolling meadows. Checkpoint 1 (Pemantuan, 1,428 m) has a shelter, but most hikers stop at Checkpoint 2 (Tengengean, 1,513 m), notably for a break. Checkpoint 3 (Pada Balong, 1,772 m) marks a change of pace: the slope steepens and the climb becomes more sustained.
Over the next three hours, you gain altitude on more demanding terrain, punctuated by successive ridges. Once the last one is crossed, the landscape opens up to the Rinjani summit on the left and, 600 meters below, to Lake Segara Anak. The trail then runs along the crater's edge for about twenty minutes to Sembalun Rim or Plawangan Dua (2,658 m), where camp is set up for the night. The site offers comfortable space for several tents, as well as a clear water source nearby.
From camp, the first meters of elevation gain are covered on a steep but compact trail, amid high-altitude vegetation. Beyond 3,000 meters, the terrain becomes entirely volcanic, composed of gravel and sand. The first section leads to the crater ridge (2,969 m), offering a clear view of the summit and the entire volcanic cirque.
The progression continues on a trail that gradually steepens. The altitude makes itself felt and slows your pace, while the first light of day illuminates the horizon. The final part of the climb requires sustained effort, particularly on deep volcanic sand that makes each step more demanding.
As you approach the summit, daylight reveals the entire volcanic landscape. The final meters are crossed on a narrow ridge leading to Rinjani's summit. At sunrise, colors progressively shift and provide favorable observation conditions.
The descent is made by the same route back to camp, in a shorter time, while remaining careful on unstable sections. The next stage leads to Lake Segara Anak. The first hour is steep, before the trail eases as it crosses high-altitude meadows and former lava flows covered with vegetation. The lake gradually appears, surrounded by volcanic reliefs.
The lake area (2,020 m) is a frequently visited passage point. Nearby, the hot water springs of Aik Kalak, accessible in about ten minutes, allow you to enjoy natural pools.
It is possible, as an optional activity, to reach the Barujari volcano (Gunung Baru), located in the center of the lake. The climb requires approximately 4 hours round trip and may involve an additional night on site.
On the final day, you head north via Goa Susu (1,885 m) to reach Torean, located over 10 kilometers away. A vehicle awaits you there for your transfer to the hotel.
