An Adventure Born in the Field

Born in the North of France, Dominic Clarisse develops a consuming passion for photography at the early age of 17. After obtaining a Bachelor of Science degree, he works as a trainee in different photography studios located in the Lille region. Then, freshly graduated from one of the most reputed schools in Brussels, where he's acquired a solid education and built a strong fundation in visual storytelling and narrative carft, Dominic takes the opportunity to quench his thirst for photographic adventures.

In his debut photo-reportage in 1992, Dominic immortalizes the ancestral rituals of Papua, impressing the famous international press agency Gamma, who publishes these images throughout the world. Leaving his brilliant career in Europe, Dominic pursues his passion for this fascinating Indonesian archipelago and works on a number of projects that take him to some of the most remote islands.

Having settled permanently in Indonesia in 1996, he founds Azimuth Adventure Travel Ltd in 1999 with a simple conviction: adventure travel can be challenging, respectful, deeply human and transformative all at once.

A pioneer among French-speaking agencies specializing in treks, expeditions and volcano climbs across the whole Indonesian archipelago, Azimuth Adventure Travel Ltd has quickly established partnerships with leading European tour operators such as Allibert Trekking, Huwans, Terres d’Aventure and Aventure & Volcans.

From the very beginning, Dominic has divided his time between designing trips and leading them in the field. This direct immersion has enabled him to explore the Indonesian archipelago in its most intimate diversity and to build up a rare understanding of the country, which he now shares through every itinerary, every encounter and every experience.

Our guides are regularly trained to the best practices for guiding, with a constant focus on the quality of the experience, the smooth running of logistics and the warmth of our interactions with guests.

Safety

Safety is not just a selling point: it is an ongoing commitment. It shapes the way we create our itineraries, select our teams and support our travelers.

We work with experienced guides, trained in first aid, who are able to assess field conditions with composure and sound judgement. We also favor small groups, generally limited to ten participants, in order to ensure attentive, responsive and responsible supervision. Whenever circumstances require it, we naturally add one or even two additional guides.
