Day 13Authentic Bali

Day 13Authentic Bali

  • Your morning walk takes you to the slopes of the southeastern hills of the island, offering a stunning viewpoint, both volcan Agung and the Indian Ocean.

You then drive towards the caldera of Mt Batur (1.725m), via the mother temple of Besakih. Located on the misty slopes of Mount Agung at 1,000 meters above sea level, it is the island’s most important temple, comprising a religious complex with 22 separate temples spread across seven terraces. With its 11-tiered ‘meru’ roofs, nearly constant religious ceremonies, and a view ‘between sea and mountains, this temple is surely one of the most spiritual. It is also the oldest and most revered temple in Bali.

Then, from Penelokan, you enjoy an exceptional view of the caldera, which is 14 kilometers long. This imposing size reflects the tumultuous past of the volcano and its once larger size, which likely surpassed that of the current Agung.

At your feet, you see the cone of Mount Batur in the middle of a vast caldera, half of which is occupied by Bali’s largest lake, while the other half is covered by plantations and lava fields, remnants of the eruptions in 1917 and 1926. You then descend into the caldera to get a closer look at the lava flows. Near the lake, where you can rest in preparation for the early wake-up the following morning, you enjoy the pleasant hot springs
