The Gili Islands, which one to choose for your trip?

Mar 15 2024

Today we are taking you to the beautiful Gili Islands! Located off the coast of Bali and Lombok, the Gili Islands are made up of 3 islets, namely Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air.

Easily accessible by boat from Bali or Lombok, these islands enjoy a good reputation among travelers. But which island should you choose for an unforgettable vacation in the sun? There is no truth as to the best island, everything will depend on your expectations and your desires: relaxation, rest, lively evenings, etc.

Whatever happens, you will enjoy magnificent white sand beaches with turquoise water. To help you find the island that suits you, here is a quick overview of the three main Gili Islands.

Gili Trawangan Island, the festive one

The Gili Islands, which one to choose for your trip?

Trawangan means a lively evening! The island, which is the largest of the 3, welcomes you with magnificent white sand beaches, lined with bars and restaurants that play music until the early morning. People come here for its nightly and lively evenings. It is perfect for those who want to spend their holidays celebrating a party with their feet in the water. The beaches in the north of the island will still provide a little more calm for those who want to take a little break from all this hustle and bustle.

Attendance

Victim of its success, Gili Trawangan is stormed by tourists. We meet a lot of people in the streets and on its beaches. The crowd shares the place with scooters, carriages and bicycles. This is part of the charm of the island and what drives it.

Price

Its high attendance surely explains its relatively high prices for Indonesia. All prices are made for tourists, whether hotels, restaurants or souvenir shops. There are still a few small, inexpensive hostels for backpackers.

Animation

As we said above, Trawangan is the most lively island. Bars every 100 meters, music galore, alcohol, everything here is for partying.

Accessibility

Very easy to access from Bali and Lombok, several public boats and fastboats go to Trawangan every day.

Gili Air Island, the family

The Gili Islands, which one to choose for your trip?

The second largest island in the Gili Islands, Gili Air provides a calmer and more relaxing atmosphere than its big sister. Here the bars and restaurants are quieter and ideal for families. The beaches are just as heavenly and offer an ideal setting for relaxing.

Attendance

Gili Air welcomes quite a few tourists but much fewer than Trawangan. You can stroll peacefully through its streets, on foot or by bike, and find delicious little restaurants.

Price

The quality/price ratio on Gili Air in terms of hotels and restaurants is significantly better than Gili Trawangan. Here you can find small, inexpensive warengs (traditional restaurants) and not too expensive rooms.

Entertainment

Apart from enjoying the beach and some water activities, the island remains relatively calm during the day and evening. You can sip a quiet drink on the beach and enjoy the sunset.

Accessibility

As for Trawangan, fastboats and public boats shuttle every day from Bali and Lombok.

Gili Meno Island, the silent one

The Gili Islands, which one to choose for your trip?

If you want to experience life like Robinson Crusoe, Meno Island will be ideal. This island is the smallest but also the wildest of the three, here calm reigns supreme. This little corner of paradise is perfect for relaxing and enjoying the pristine beaches. In a subdued and intimate atmosphere, the few restaurants liven up the place in complete tranquility and simplicity. La Meno is perfect for couples and travelers looking for a little corner of paradise. Its small success means that today it records a higher attendance rate, let's hope that it will be able to maintain its charm and authenticity for a long time to come.

Attendance

You will have understood, there are no parties here, few families, absolute calm. The island being smaller and more difficult to access, many people avoid it for greater convenience. You can then easily find yourself alone on the beach for a stroll at sunset.

Price

The prices are rather affordable and the quality/price ratio is correct. However, the choice is more limited in terms of restaurants and accommodation.

Animation

On Meno, besides lounging, relaxing and enjoying the wild nature there are few things to do. The few restaurants do not provide much entertainment strictly speaking but rather an intimate atmosphere. The evenings can, however, be enlivened by the music that comes from Trawangan.

Accessibility

More difficult to access than its big sisters, the Gili Meno is accessible by slow and fast public boats. Only one fasboat has obtained authorization to enter there for the moment.

Gili Asahan, the peaceful

Small bonus in this article, we tell you about Gili Asahan. Still secret, this small island will give you the impression of being lost in the middle of the ocean. Almost deserted, Asahan is perfect for relaxing in peace and enjoying its small white sand beaches lined with coconut trees, in the shade of which you can relax. Its tranquility invites meditation.
