Bedugul is a small village in north-central Bali that draws visitors when they stay in Indonesian territory. Its geographical location is, among other things, one of its greatest assets. Indeed, this locality sits at the foot of Mount Bratan and along the shores of its namesake lake.

As you wander through, you'll get a real sense of daily life for locals. You'll find an impressive variety of fresh fruits and vegetables such as rambutans, bananas, mandarins, mangosteens, cabbage, carrots, papayas, and more. You can also purchase various spices (turmeric, nutmeg, cloves, paprika…), plants, and flowers at this market. In short, the products displayed on the stalls offer a beautiful visual spectacle rich in colour. Moreover, if you're looking for local traditional items, know that many local artisans come to sell and showcase their masterpieces here. Among the articles offered are notably paintings and textiles.

Pura Ulun Danu Bratan Temple

This temple, whose name means "the beginning of the lake," is arguably one of the most extraordinary temples on the island of Bali. Indeed, it was built in the 17th century on the shores of Lake Bratan (Bali's second-largest lake) for the water goddess Dewi Danu. The ceremonies held here are therefore dedicated to this deity so she will irrigate the region's rice paddies. On site, you'll see one of the famous merus typical of Balinese Hindu temples. It's a wooden tower featuring stacked thatched roofs. The one at Pura Ulun Danu is adorned with 11 roofs and is dedicated to Shiva and his wife Parvati.

It's worth noting that this Hindu sanctuary frequently appears on postcards. It goes without saying that it particularly interests photography enthusiasts. The beauty of the location truly reveals itself at dawn or dusk. Should you also wish to capture some memorable photographs, choose between these times of day. Bali Botanical Garden

The mountainous area surrounding the village of Bedugul is renowned among travellers for housing Indonesia's largest botanical garden, also known locally as "Kebun Raya Bali." This vast green space, situated at nearly 1,250 metres elevation and covering approximately 160 hectares, is a true paradise for botanists. It features an impressive collection of vegetation including an exceptional variety of trees, plants, and flowers. Generally, visits are made by car since a route has been specially developed for vehicle circulation. However, it's also possible to explore the grounds on foot. Additionally, Balinese families often visit the botanical garden on weekends to relax and enjoy quality time, especially since the site features an adventure park called Treetop Adventure Park.

Situated at altitude, approximately 1,500 metres above sea level, the village of Bedugul enjoys a mild climate that offers welcome respite from the heat.

Bedugul is accessible from Denpasar. The distance between these two locations is approximately 48 kilometres. The city of Singaraja is another starting point for reaching this village. You'll need to travel around 20 kilometres before arriving at your destination.
