The Indonesian government does not recognize animism as an official religion. However, it is important to know that before the arrival of Buddhism and Hinduism in Indonésie, the vast majority of the population practiced animistic rites. They revered nature, believed in the presence of spirits, and worshipped their ancestors. These indigenous beliefs consist of making offerings to natural forces such as trees, rivers, mountains, and so forth, with the aim of appeasing offended spirits and securing their protection.

Animism had a profound impact on the social behavior of Indonesians. Indeed, one can observe the influence of these animistic beliefs in Balinese Hinduism. Even today, this religion can be found in remote areas of the Indonesian archipelago. Certain tribes and peoples continue to perpetuate their traditions. Generally, animism was incorporated into the Christian beliefs of peoples evangelized during the Portuguese and Dutch colonizations.
