Adventures on 2-wheels across Java - 30 days

Welcome by your English-speaking guide at Jakarta international airport and transfer to the seaside, at the far west of Java.

In the early evening, you will be welcomed by a family of fishermen, who will invite you to taste crabs, shrimp and other grilled fish... a real delight!

You will then spend the night in a simple but very lively hotel (Indonesians come to spend the weekend there and contacts are easy and joyful)! From the hotel, it is sometimes even possible to hear the distant rumble of an explosion from Krakatoa.

Mid-morning, you head towards the village port, where you board a speed-boat that takes you towards the shores of the mythical Krakatoa volcano.

You make a tour of the island while maintaining a safe distance, according to volcanic conditions (since the paroxysmal eruption in late December 2018, the volcano "Anak Krakatau" - as it is called by Indonesians - is in an unstable phase where eruptions are random at any given time).

The morning is dedicated to exploring the Krakatoa volcano and its surroundings. Depending on its activity, you will climb up the sides of the old cone to observe the new one, born in 2021 and regularly erupting. Swimming in the sea is possible.

Return to Carita in the afternoon. The rest of the day is free.

Early morning scooter departure towards the village of Ciboleger, considered the gateway to Baduy territory. You will then begin a pleasant hike to the village of Gazeboh, which marks the border between the "outer" Baduy and "inner" Baduy zones. Immersion in this culturally rich Baduy community. You will also climb the hill overlooking the village to get a wider view of the surrounding plantations: rice fields, sugar cane fields, banana gardens, etc. Possibility of swimming in the eponymous river.

In the evening, you will attend a traditional music show (Angklung & Suling, in particular).

Late at night, possibility to climb the hill again, in order to observe a superb sunrise over the Baduy region, then, mid-morning, you resume your journey towards another indigenous village, specialist in fabrics. Return to Cipolager in early afternoon and drive to the beaches of Sawarna, on the south coast of Java.

The small village of Sawarna is surrounded by magnificent landscapes (mountains, caves and rivers), but above all has the advantage of being bordered by a long white sand beach, which explains its tourist boom in recent years. The morning is therefore dedicated to rest and exploring the surroundings.

Departure in the afternoon towards Sinar Resmi, via the amazing Tugu Gede megalithic site.

The day is dedicated to discovering Ciptagelar, which is the seat of the Kingdom of the Ancients, a legendary kingdom populated by tigers that are said to still haunt the forest, "and which have the peculiarity of being able to make themselves as large as a buffalo or as small as a cat while maintaining the same tail length. " In the Kingdom of the Ancients, Dewi Sri, or more precisely Pohaci, the nubile form of the goddess of rice fields, always has her room reserved in each house, and no one but the mistress of the house has the right to enter it. The center of the village is occupied by the Ima Gede, a very vast communal house, also built entirely of wood, bamboo and thatch. It is there that each full moon evening, the women prepare ritual rice cakes over wood fires in the immense kitchen where men also gather, sometimes arriving on foot from distant hamlets to exchange news and rice seeds.

In early afternoon, travel towards the coastal village of Ujung Genteng, via the seaside resort of Pelabuhan Ratu. Ujung Genteng beach is one of the world's largest green sea turtle nesting sites. You therefore follow, at night, the personnel of the turtle conservation center, in order to spot green sea turtles nesting. The aim is to collect their eggs and keep them safe until they hatch. The babies are then released into the Indian Ocean.

Free time in the morning, then departure towards the small port of Jayanti, along the south coast of Java.

The coastal road is filled with long beaches of black sand, but the surrounding mountains also hide some spectacular waterfalls, such as those of Cikaso.

3 hours of hiking

Early morning departure towards the hills of the Malabar region, renowned for its tea plantations. Once settled in a room near the former Dutch plantation owner's house, you will be free to explore on foot the vast green expanse surrounding you.

You will also pass by the tomb of Karel Albert Rudolf Boscha, the founder and patron of the surrounding tea plantations.

Early in the morning, you take advantage of the cool mountain air to enjoy a lovely walk through the tea plantations and visit the processing factory which will teach you a lot about the uses of tea.

Then drive towards the outskirts of Tasikmalaya. Along the way, you make a stop at the Darajat hot springs and at Kampung Naga, a traditional Sundanese hamlet renowned for its traditional houses which are characterized by their functionality, simplicity, modesty, their use of natural thatched materials, and their fairly faithful adherence to harmony with nature and the environment.

In the morning, you explore the surroundings of the Galunggung volcano (2,168 m), whose last eruption in 1982 caused the engines of two commercial aircraft to shut down (which the pilots nevertheless managed to restart). It is a stratovolcano, split open by a horseshoe-shaped caldera, and the bottom of it is occupied by an impressive crater 600 m in diameter.

Transfer in the afternoon to the seaside, at Batukaras

Free morning, and transfer in early afternoon to Baturraden, a mountain resort located on the slopes of Mt Slamet.

A lovely morning walk takes you to discover landscapes as sublime as varied: authentic villages, terraced rice fields, wild rivers and dense tropical forest…

A relaxation session will then be offered to you, in an idyllic setting of hot spring thermal sources. A reflexology massage based on sulfurous mud will also be proposed to you by a local therapist.

Continuation towards Wonosobo in the afternoon.

2 hours of walking

Morning transfer to the Dieng Plateau. Densely populated and cultivated, the plateau is an archaeological site featuring eight Hindu temples in ruins. The day is dedicated to discovering the different tourist attractions (Telaga Warna lake, temples, smoking crater of Sikidang volcano, etc.).

Transfer in the afternoon to the slopes of Mt Sumbing.

Early in the morning, you visit the famous Borobudur Temple, built in the 8th and 9th centuries during the Sailendra dynasty.

In the afternoon, travel to Yogyakarta (or Jogjakarta), the cultural capital of Java.

The morning is dedicated to visiting Yogyakarta (or Jogjakarta), the cultural capital of Java, and particularly the surroundings of the Sultan's Palace built in 1756, where life is pleasant.

Our city tour takes us to Taman Sari, known during the Dutch colonial empire as the "Water Palace", then to puppet and batik workshops.

Late in the morning, you head towards Ratu Boko temple, perched on the hills of Gunung Kidul overlooking the Prambanan plain. You then begin a short hike to the Hindu temple of Prambanan, through forest, traditional villages and rice paddies. You then visit the Prambanan temple complex and more particularly Loro Jonggrang, a sumptuous 47-meter-high temple dedicated to the goddess Siva. It is considered the most elegant and stunning Hindu temple on the island of Java.

Possibility (optional) to attend the Ramayana show.

Return to the hotel in early or mid-evening.

Free morning, then drive towards Pacitan Bay, very popular with surfers. Along the way, you cross the limestone hills of the Gunung Kidul region ("the southern mountains" in Javanese), which allow you to make stops along extraordinary small coves, along the coast.

Route in the morning towards the historic city of Blitar, with several stops along the way, notably at Mingging peak, which offers a superb panorama of all the surrounding areas, as well as the impressive Songgolangit waterfalls.

Early departure towards the Lumajang region, skirting the south slopes of the majestic Semeru volcano. We then reach Tumpak Sewu waterfall; in Javanese).

Descending into the gorge (via a slippery and sometimes steep path), we will indeed feel the force of these hundreds of streams that cascade down by "plunging" over 100m. Viewed from above, the beauty of this waterfall seems ephemeral as fine mist permeates everything in its path. It is no wonder that a photo of Tumpak Sewu with Mt Semeru in the background was awarded "best aerial shot" in 2019.
And, if you also bring your camera equipment, remember to protect it against humidity.

In the afternoon, drive to Tumpang, a small village located at the foot of the Tengger-Bromo-Semeru massif.

In mid-morning, you head towards the Tengger region, where the famous Mount Bromo (2329 m) spews its smoke, and the caldera surrounding it forms a gigantic sea of sand. During this journey, we cross the remarkable forest of the Tengger-Bromo-Semeru National Park, also skirting part of the ridge of the Bromo volcano's caldera, before descending towards the sea of sand to reach the village of Cemorolawang (located on one of the opposite ridges). Mt Bromo is the most venerated by the Hindu Tengger people who live in the region.

Mid-morning transfer to the magnificent Papuma beach, where a delicious seafood lunch awaits you. Papuma is a stretch of land that juts out into the ocean, and the cliffs, combined with the various corals, offer a stunning panorama.

The afternoon is free for you to enjoy.

Transfer to east Java, and more specifically to the village of Kalibaru, located in the middle of various plantations, which were once exploited by Dutch colonists.

In the afternoon, you begin a pleasant hike in the surrounding area.

Early morning transfer to the surroundings of Kawah Ijen ("green crater" in old Javanese).

After settling into the hotel, your guide takes you to beautiful terraced rice fields from which you begin a pleasant walk through traditional villages and other plantations (fruits, spices, etc.).

2-3 hours of walking

Early in the morning, you head off towards the slopes of Kawah Ijen ("green crater" in Old Javanese), which you climb easily in the company of men who extract sulfur daily on the edge of the world's largest acid lake. These real "laborers" carry nearly 80 kg of ore on their backs over approximately 15 km to the processing plant! You then witness the weighing and various work contracts. A very striking and gripping image of your trip.

Late in the morning, transfer to Ketapang port where you board a ferry bound for Bali. Short transfer to the beach resort of Pemuteran, a small beach resort located on the northwest coast of the island of the gods, far from tourist crowds.
