Highly evident in the town's architecture, Dutch colonial style is one of many legacies left by Bali's former rulers. They also profoundly influenced local gastronomy. Echoes of the past: a city rebuilt on lava

Once known as Karangasem, the town was the heart of one of Bali's most powerful kingdoms. A dynasty bearing the town's name and that of the entire province, supported by Dutch colonial powers.

In 1963, the eruption of Mount Gunung Agung devastated much of Karangasem. To overcome this dark period and invite good fortune, the town was renamed Amlapura. In Indonesian, Amla means fruit and pura means place.

Certainly less grand than its former glory, Amlapura has become a model of cleanliness and development on the island of Bali. Remarkably, the lava has enriched the soil tremendously. Agriculture and livestock thrive in the town. Life here is peaceful. Beyond its former palatial residences and royal baths, Amlapura is also known for its historic market.

Despite its modest size, this locale boasts considerable charm. Terraced rice paddies, water gardens dotted with water lilies and flowering shrubs, an 11-tiered fountain adorned with singular sculptures, picturesque swimming pools… Views of Mount Agung are spectacular. Located roughly 5 km from Bali's eastern coast, Amlapura is close to the sea. Jasri Beach is the most popular with holidaymakers.

Flights from around the world serve Bali via the Ngurah Rai International Airport. A bus station is located just beside the airport. You'll find car rentals there for your journey to Amlapura. The trip takes approximately 3 hours on average. Depending on your mood, this journey can be a time for musical relaxation, rest, or a first encounter with Bali's idyllic landscape.

Getting around the town

The bicycle is the perfect way to explore Amlapura's streets and alleyways. Simply rent one locally. Of course, walking is always an option—and highly recommended for maintaining your health.
