Java & Bali: The Volcano Odyssey

Upon your arrival at Jakarta airport, you will be warmly welcomed before being transferred to your hotel.

In the evening, enjoy a friendly dinner where you will receive a detailed presentation of your stay, followed by a first briefing to start this adventure off right.

Mid-morning, head to the village port to board a speed-boat that will take you to the shores of the famous Krakatoa volcano.

You will tour around the island while respecting a safety distance, adapted to current volcanic conditions. Since the major eruption in December 2018, the volcano Anak Krakatau, as Indonesians call it, remains unpredictable with random eruptions.

The evening ends with a bivouac at the foot of the volcano or on one of the neighboring islands, for an unforgettable experience.

Depending on volcanic activity, you will be able to climb the flanks of the old cone to admire the new cone, born in 2021 and still regularly erupting. A swimming break in the sea is possible to enjoy the exceptional setting.

In the afternoon, return to Carita, then transfer to Jakarta.

Hiking time approximately 2-3 hours.

Departure for Bandung, nicknamed the Paris of Java, perched at 768 m altitude and surrounded by majestic volcanoes. This stage allows you to visit the geological museum as well as the Indonesian Volcanological Center.

Next, head to the Tangkuban Perahu volcano, where you can walk along the edge of the active crater and admire the spectacular landscapes.

Late afternoon, transfer to your hotel for an evening of relaxation.

Hiking time approximately 2 hours.

Departure for Papandayan volcano, crossing an impressive volcanic chain. Nearby, the smoking geysers of the Kamojang crater catch the eye. A hike allows you to explore the boiling mud pools, steam vents and sulfur deposits, witnesses to the region's geothermal activity.

The visit continues at the Kamojang geothermal center, located in the heart of a vast caldera stretching several kilometers, before a transfer to the hotel for the evening.

Hiking time approximately 2 hours.

In the morning, transfer to Galunggung volcano, where you will hike around the crater to admire the volcanic landscapes. You will study the impacts of the 1982 eruptions, when enormous lahars (mud and ash flows) swept down the slopes, forcing more than 30,000 residents to evacuate.

At the end of the day, transfer to Baturaden, a hotel complex nestled at the foot of Mount Slamet, for an evening of relaxation.

The morning begins with a walk through varied and enchanting landscapes, between authentic villages, terraced rice fields, wild rivers and lush tropical forests.

After this discovery, enjoy a relaxation session in an idyllic setting of natural hot springs, with the possibility of a reflexology massage with sulfurous mud, provided by a local therapist.

In the afternoon, transfer to Wonosobo to continue your adventure.

Perched on the slopes of the extinct volcano Perahu, Wonosobo is a charming small town surrounded by tea and tobacco plantations, in one of Indonésie's most fertile agricultural regions.

The morning is dedicated to a walk through these crops, to the shores of the volcanic lake of Menjer (1,200 m altitude), where you observe local life.

Next, you will quickly discover the Dieng plateau, before transferring to Magelang to continue your journey.

Hiking time approximately 3 hours 30 minutes.

In the morning, set off on a trek through magnificent terraced rice fields to the lost temple of Selogryo, which was rediscovered by local inhabitants in 1835. The walk continues through a clear high-altitude forest, passing through traditional villages and local plantations.

Next, be amazed by Borobudur, the largest and most majestic Buddhist temple in the world.

In the afternoon, transfer to Yogyakarta to continue your cultural exploration.

Hiking time of approximately 3 hours.

This day is dedicated to the observation and study of Mount Merapi and the consequences of its impressive eruption in late 2010. From a viewpoint at 1,200 m altitude on the eastern slope, you will discover the devastating effects caused by a series of catastrophic factors.

The exploration continues along the Gendol river bed, where pyroclastic flows rushed down towards surrounding villages. You will then analyze the volcano's still intense geological activity, before visiting the Merapi Museum.

After lunch, you will discover the refugee center, built following the eruption, then you will head towards Prambanan, the largest Hindu temple in Indonésie.

Hiking duration of approximately 2 hours.

In the morning, transfer to the Sukuh temple, considered the last stronghold of Hinduism in central Java in the face of Islam's spread. This temple stands out for its unique iconography, with phallic figures and large turtle-shaped tables, revealing ancient initiatory rituals.

Then, a hike to the village of Tawangmangu, on the slopes of the Lawu Volcano, allows you to discover local flora and admire splendid panoramas over the pine forest and high-altitude plantations. The walk ends with a crossing of the Tawangmangu park, leading to the Grojogan Sewu waterfall, nestled in the heart of a tropical forest populated by monkeys.

In the afternoon, transfer to Tumpang, near Malang, at the western foot of the Bromo-Tengger-Semeru massif.

Hiking time of approximately 4 hours (Elevation gain: +400 m / -300m).

Early in the morning, board 4x4 vehicles to explore the Tengger region, where the famous Mount Bromo (2,329 m) releases its wisps and where the surrounding caldera forms a spectacular sea of sand. During the journey, cross the impressive forest of Tengger-Bromo-Semeru national park and follow part of the caldera ridge, before descending to the village of Cemorolawang, located on an opposite ridge. Mount Bromo, revered by the Hindu Tengger people, will be climbed in the early afternoon, offering a fascinating view of its smoking crater, once considered the gateway to purgatory by the Javanese.

The day continues at the summit of Mount Pananjakan (2,775 m) to witness an unforgettable sunset, with a panoramic view of Mount Bromo, its sea of sand and the Semeru volcano, both emitting impressive fumaroles.

Return to the hotel in the early evening.

Early in the morning, climb into a 4x4 to cross the sea of sand and reach the summit of Mount Pananjakan (2,755 m). Admire a magical sunrise over the caldera, with Mount Bromo and the slopes of the Semeru volcano, both emitting impressive plumes of smoke.

After this unforgettable spectacle, have breakfast before heading to Gunung Sawur, the observation post of the Mount Semeru, to deepen your discovery.

In the afternoon, transfer to Licin for a night at the hotel and conclude this unique adventure.

In the early morning, board a 4x4 to reach the slopes of Kawah Ijen, nicknamed the "green crater" in old Javanese.
Accompanied by miners who daily extract sulfur on the edge of the world's largest acidic lake, you will climb the volcano and discover their impressive work: these men carry up to 80 kg of ore over approximately 15 km to the treatment plant, before weighing and examination of work contracts. This experience leaves a striking and memorable impression.

Late morning, transfer to Ketapang port to board a ferry to Bali.

Short transfer to Pemuteran, a small beach resort on the northwest coast, far from the tourist hustle and bustle, for a relaxing stay.

Hiking time approximately 4 hours.

Transfer to Penelokan, along the north coast of Bali, to visit the Batur volcano museum. This place is a true treasure trove of information on volcanism and geology, offering a fascinating insight into this mysterious volcano.

Then head to one of the best viewpoints in the region to observe the spectacular morphology of Batur volcano. The day ends with a return to the hotel to enjoy the surrounding setting.

Early in the morning, set off to discover the basaltic lava formations from the 1963 eruption. The visit continues towards the hot springs of Toya Bungkah, where you can take a swim and enjoy a moment of relaxation in the Toya Devasya spring.

After lunch on site, transfer to Ubud to continue your Balinese stay.
