The Kintamani region, centered around the spectacular caldera of Batur volcano, with its deep crater lake and bubbling hot springs, is rugged and wild in beauty. The pure and invigorating air, as well as the breathtaking 360-degree views make Kintamani one of Bali's most important tourist stops. Batur is certainly a fabulous volcano, consisting of a "double caldera" - a crater within another crater. As you approach Kintamani, the land rises steadily towards an almost flat horizon, with only the Agung and Abang volcanoes visible to the east. The rim of Batur's caldera has a diameter of more than 14 kilometers with, in the very middle of it, the blackened cone of Batur volcano, surrounded on the right by the long blue waters of its namesake lake and, on the left, by lava fields created by relatively recent volcanic eruptions, as well as by highly fertile vegetable plantations.
The considerable size of this caldera implies that Mount Batur was once a much taller volcano - perhaps as tall as the neighboring Agung volcano - which exploded thousands of years ago. Batur remains active - the last serious eruptions occurred in 1965, 1974, 1994 and 2000. The eruptions occurred on the lower western flank of the volcano and left a vast field of black, sharp lava rocks, which are now exploited by locals as building material. Lake Batur, Bali's largest lake, feeds an underground network of springs distributed across the central and southern flanks of the volcano.
To climb the Batur volcano, there are two trail starting points - one in the village of Toyabungkah (1,050 m) and the other, much more popular, from the Batur parking lot (1,065 m), located one kilometer southwest of the village.

Recommended for hikers in good physical condition
If you choose to climb at night, it is advised to start around 4 am. It will take you approximately one and a half hours to reach the small warung located on the lower part of the volcano, and nearly two hours to reach the summit. The first 30 minutes of hiking cross vegetable plantations established on former lava flows. The fertile soil allows for the cultivation of tomatoes, corn, shallots and cabbage. The trail, which is accessible, rises gradually and already offers beautiful views of the surrounding area.
This first section ends at a small sanctuary, where your guide leaves an offering to request the protection of the Gods. The path then becomes steeper and sometimes slippery. This section, which winds along the volcano's slope, requires approximately 45 minutes of additional effort.
At daybreak, the landscape gradually reveals itself. To the east, the island of Lombok and Mount Rinjani appear on the horizon. In the foreground, to the southeast, Mount Abang and then Mount Agung come into view. Many hikers choose to watch the sunrise from the first warung, before beginning the descent. However, you can continue climbing by following the crater's edge towards the east for approximately 300 metres, before beginning a steeper climb towards the upper part of the ridge. This section, more demanding and sometimes slippery, lasts approximately 30 minutes. A second warung is located near the highest point, where you can take a break and enjoy breakfast prepared using the volcano's natural heat.
The next 500 metres run along the crater's edge. The passage can be narrow and steep, sometimes requiring the use of hands. At the western end, the trail splits: either you follow the ridge to return towards the first warung, or you descend into an area of volcanic gravel leading to the sites of Batur's last eruptions (1994 and 2000). If this area is accessible, your guide can accompany you there. This detour adds approximately one and a half hours of hiking through former lava flows.
The return to Toyabungkah takes approximately one and a half hours. This time, the descent is made in daylight, allowing you to fully appreciate the landscapes. The first third follows the volcanic cone, the second crosses lava flows, and the last reaches an area combining pine forests and cultivated land. This climb constitutes an accessible experience for discovering Bali's volcanic environment, while remaining gradual.

Health and vaccinations
No vaccine is mandatory to enter Indonesia, except in case of transit through a country at risk of yellow fever, in which case an international vaccination certificate may be required.
As a precaution, it is advisable to consult a doctor or vaccination center before departure. Vaccinations against hepatitis A, hepatitis B, typhoid and rabies are commonly recommended for stays in Indonesia. Antimalarial treatment may also be recommended depending on the regions visited (particularly outside Bali and major cities).
Travel with children
Minors must hold their own valid passport covering the duration of the stay.
In some countries, when a minor travels without one of their parents, an authorization to exit the territory may be required according to the regulations of the country of residence.
