History

The history of Wonosobo village dates back to the early 17th century, when three explorers decided to settle in the vicinity of the Dieng Plateau. Later, other migrants joined them, forming a small community within the thick forests of the region. In fact, the village's name is closely tied to these migrations. Wonosobo combines two words: "wono," meaning forest, and "sobo," meaning visit. Thus, Wonosobo refers to the forest that was much visited.

When the island of Java fell under colonial rule, Wonosobo's forest was transformed into wooded plains, agricultural lands, and plantations—including tea plantations that brought the region renown. The village's inhabitants were hired by the imperial government to work in the plantations and agricultural zones, yet they had no control over their own land.

Today

Today, Wonosobo remains renowned for its exceptionally fertile lands, making it one of Indonésie's richest agricultural regions. Indeed, revenues from its plantations and vast agricultural zones form the foundation of the local economy. Beyond agriculture, residents also earn their living from fishing, small businesses, and tourism. Regarding the latter, Wonosobo's proximity to must-see destinations on the island of Java—such as Semarang, Surakarta, and Yogyakarta—has made it an important stop in this part of Indonésie.

Cherished for its fresh air and tranquil atmosphere, Wonosobo offers visitors a stay centered on relaxation and wellness. Just three kilometers north of the village, the Kalianget thermal pool is renowned for the health benefits its warm waters provide. Fifteen kilometers east of Wonosobo lies the natural spring of Surodilogo, whose waters are considered sacred.

For the more adventurous, trekking can be organized to discover the region's natural wonders. Wonosobo is also surrounded by volcanoes. To the north lies Mount Tangkuban Parahu, and stretching from east to west are the symmetrical peaks of Sumbing and Sundoro.

Wonosobo is also a departure point for numerous tourist sites, the most famous being the Dieng Plateau, located 25 km from the village. This majestic site brings together lakes, craters, and temples—particularly the eight structures that comprise the Arjuna Temple complex.

The Wonosobo region enjoys a tropical climate with two seasons: a dry season and a rainy season. Average annual temperatures range between 14°C and 26°C. Annual rainfall ranges between 1,713 and 4,255 mm per year.

Wonosobo is easily accessible by car from the cities of Yogyakarta, Surakarta, and Semarang.

Public buses also connect this village to Yogyakarta and Surakarta.
