History

Merbabu is an extinct stratovolcano whose name means "Mountain of Ashes" in Indonesian. Though less famous than its neighbor Merapi, it boasts numerous qualities that make it one of Indonesia's must-visit sites. Merbabu has two summits: Syarif at 3,119 m and Kenteng Songo at 3,145 m. It's also a lush mountain, so lush that one sometimes forgets it's a volcano at all.

Merbabu's last eruption occurred in 1797. While the risk of future eruption cannot be ruled out, the number of people attempting its ascent continues to grow.

Today

Mount Merbabu is among the volcanoes offering one of the region's finest vistas. Two peaks dominate: Syarif at 3,119 m and Kenteng Songo at 3,145 m. Merbabu also has five calderas—Condrodimuko, Kombang, Kendang, Rebab, and Sambernyowo—though no activity has been recorded in many years.

Upon reaching the Kenteng Songo summit, an exceptional view awaits: the cities of Jogja and Solo, along with surrounding volcanoes like Merapi, Lawu, and Sumbing. This natural marvel, both fascinating and somewhat imposing, is a gathering place for trekking enthusiasts and adventure seekers.

Climbing Merbabu

Climbing Merbabu is one of Central Java's most popular hikes. The volcano is accessible via several trails. Near Kopeng to the north, you'll find starting points at Thekelan, Cunthel, and Wekas. The other option is to head to Selo in the south. Recently, a trail opened to the west at Suwanting and has become quite popular with trekkers from Yogyakarta.

The most athletic could complete the trek in a single day, but spending a night is recommended to fully appreciate the area's beauty.

Starting from Selo, the hike begins through forest before vegetation thins and gives way to vast green expanses dotted with groves. Sabana II base camp is reached in 5 hours of walking and offers a stunning sunset over Merapi. The next day, it's best to depart at night to reach the Kenteng Songo summit in time for sunrise. Once at the top, you'll have an unobstructed view of the cities of Jogjakarta and Solo to the south, with the silhouette of Merapi and six Central Java volcanoes silhouetted on the horizon.

The other trek from north to south, departing from Thekelan, follows a gentle slope while the descent offers magnificent views of Merapi. At the village, you'll be asked to register at the small national park office. Plan for approximately 6 to 8 hours of hiking to the summit.

From Jakarta, take the train or bus to Semarang, Yogyakarta, or Surakarta. Then, from one of these three cities, take a bus to Kopeng. At Kopeng, several options are available: begin your hike from Thekelan village to the north (quite a long trek) or take a bus or taxi to the small village of Selo to the south.

Practical Information

The climb is of moderate difficulty. While the hike is intermediate-level, be sure to bring proper hiking boots, warm clothing, a headlamp, water, and snacks to avoid surprises and fully enjoy the adventure. Don't forget sunscreen either, as the ascent takes you along exposed, non-forested trails.
