History

The word Sanur derives from the roots saha and nuhur, a name reflecting a passion for travel and discovery. Originally, it was a small fishing village inhabited by members of the Brahmin caste.

In 1906, it was at Sanur that the Dutch landed to conquer the island of Bali. In the 1930s, the town became a haven for foreign celebrities, including photographer Jack Merson and Impressionist painter Adrien Jean Le Mayeur. Sanur owes much of its current prestige to these artists. In the 1950s, the Dutch Indies company built the Sindhu Beach Hotel there to accommodate the growing number of tourists. This was followed by the construction of the Bali Beach Hotel in 1962, funded by Japan as post-war reparations. Later, the Tanjung Sari hotel was built in an architectural style more typical of Bali.

For a long time, Sanur remained Bali's principal beach resort before being eclipsed by Kuta.

Today

The authenticity of the village, the tranquility of the place, and safe swimming waters make Sanur renowned. Stretching across three kilometers, its white sand beach is equally suited to lounging, barefoot strolls, and water activities. A series of tropical trees line it, facing the coral that protects the shore from heavy swells.

While wandering about, you'll stumble upon small eateries called "warungs." Venture into one if you want to taste authentic Balinese cuisine, including the famous fish grilled with coconut!

If you're not in the mood for a beach walk, visit instead the former home of painter Adrien Jean Le Mayeur. Located in the Hangtuah Street quarter, the residence has been converted into a museum and houses a rich collection of works by the Belgian painter. Further south, Pura Blanjong temple opens its doors onto preserved mangroves, overlooked by a walkway for easy access.

With its quality hotels, Sanur is perfectly suited for family vacations, a romantic getaway, or a solo retreat. Climate

Sanur's climate is characterized by a dry winter season. During summer, rainfall is particularly heavy in January and December. The average temperature hovers around 27.5°C year-round.

To make the most of Sanur's attractions, plan your trip between June and October.

Sanur is 30 minutes by taxi from Denpasar Airport and Kuta. If traveling from Ubud, the journey takes about half an hour. You can travel by bicycle or motorbike if you prefer fresh air. As for public transport, buses and "angkots" connecting north and south generally stop at Sanur.

Additionally, boats can take you to Nusa Lembongan island. Check schedules with dedicated services.

Between taxis, public buses, bicycles, or rental cars, transport options abound in Sanur to facilitate your travels.
