History

Climbing Semeru

Scaling Semeru presents a genuine challenge. Given its elevation (3,676 m), allow at least 2 days to reach its summit, the Mahameru. A solid level of fitness is essential for undertaking this adventure.

The final push to the summit proves particularly demanding. Between the cold, steep slopes, and ash swirling through the air, those last meters aren't always straightforward. However, it's advisable to start at night so that upon reaching the summit, you can witness a spectacular sunrise that words simply cannot capture. The sweeping vista across the entire island and its volcanic peaks seeming to float in a sea of clouds is a genuine invitation to contemplation.

The starting point for the Semeru ascent lies in the village of Ranu Pani, situated at 2,200 m. It's located 373 km from the cultural city of Yogyakarta. Car rental remains the most practical way to get there.
