Located 18 km north of Ubud, the village of Tampaksiring boasts two main attractions: the sacred springs of Tirta Empul and the majestic Gunung Kawi temple. The legends surrounding these sites have made it an important pilgrimage destination that draws visitors from both near and far.
Today
Tampaksiring stands as one of Bali's true gems. While the village offers no shortage of tourist attractions, it remains best known for the sacred springs of Tirta Empul and Gunung Kawi temple.
The springs of Tirta Empul are renowned for their healing properties. This is a major pilgrimage site where, each day, dozens of buses deposit pilgrims seeking purification in the blessed waters. Local tradition holds that residents of the region should visit at least once a year for spiritual cleansing.
The Gunung Kawi temple, meanwhile, reveals itself as a place unlike any other on Bali. For locals, this thousand-year-old tomb carved into rock in the 10th century is the work of the gods. Reaching the temple requires climbing over 200 steps, but the effort is absolutely worthwhile. Moreover, the staircase leading to the temple winds through magnificent terraced rice fields, offering visitors a breathtaking vista.

Generally, Tampaksiring enjoys warm weather year-round. However, September and October remain the most favorable months for tourism. December and January bring the heaviest rainfall.
From Ubud, the best option for reaching Tampaksiring is to hire a private car with driver, as there is no public bus service connecting the two destinations. You may also consider renting a scooter, an excellent way to get around and enjoy the natural surroundings.
