Bogor is located in West Java province, approximately 60 km north of Jakarta, the country's capital. It ranks among the must-see destinations in the region. It's worth noting that in addition to being a city (kota), Bogor is also considered a district (Kabupaten) in its own right. This locality is primarily celebrated for its magnificent botanical garden.

History

Long before foreigners arrived on Indonesian territory, Bogor was not called by that name and was still under the rule of the Sunda kingdom (around 669). At that time, the city was called Pakuan Pajajaran and is said to have been among the most important cities of medieval Indonesia. At its peak, the city was home to nearly 50,000 inhabitants. Over time, locals referred to the kingdom as Pajajaran and the city as Pakuan. The name Pakuan was officially recognized only after the coronation of King Siliwangi on June 3, 1482. It was at this very date that Pakuan became openly recognized as the capital of the Pajajaran kingdom.

Later, when the Dutch arrived, they named the city "Buitenzorg" literally meaning "without care". It wasn't until the Japanese occupation that the city finally received its current name, Bogor.

Today

Bogor is a city discovered today for its splendid botanical garden.

Since its creation in 1817, Bogor's botanical garden has captivated travelers from around the world. The site welcomes nearly 2 million visitors almost every year. This green space, which spans nearly 87 hectares, is the brainchild of a German naturalist named Casper Georg Carl Reinwardt. At the time, he worked for the Dutch East Indies government and named the place "Lands Plantentuin". He created this garden primarily for scientific purposes—to gather and classify various indigenous plant species for medicinal use.

Climate

Bogor's climate is tropical with abundant rainfall even during the dry season. The local average annual temperature is around 25°C, with September being the warmest month and February the coolest.

Getting to Bogor from Jakarta is quite straightforward—simply take a train operated by Kereta Commuter Indonesia. DAMRI buses are stationed at Jakarta airport and provide direct service to Bogor. Taxis can also easily get you there.
