The History of Ambarawa

In the 13th century, Ambarawa was once known as Limbarawa, ruled by the Majapahit Kingdom, which controlled the eastern reaches of Java at that time.

During the Dutch colonial era, it became an important military base, and King William I of the Netherlands commissioned the construction of a railway to better supply troops in Semarang. This infrastructure project transformed the city into one of Java's principal railway hubs, connecting major cities such as Magelang, Salatiga, and Yogyakarta. In 1976, Ambarawa station closed its doors to traffic, converting into a museum that now displays an impressive collection of locomotives.

Under Japanese occupation, the city was seized by Japanese forces due to its strategic location and served as internment camps for prisoners of war. Approximately 15,000 people were held there, the majority European. Following Japan's surrender on August 15, 1945, Indonesia declared its independence on August 17 that same year. In the wake of these events, violent clashes erupted between British troops—sent to rescue European detainees—and the newly formed Indonesian military.
