If you're seeking a destination that ventures beyond the usual tourist trail and promises an authentic experience, head to the north of Flores island. Located within its namesake bay, Maumere is the capital of Kabupaten Sikka—the second-largest city on the island. It's surrounded by magnificent natural landscapes and offers activities suited to both tourism and relaxation.

History

In 1992, an earthquake triggered a devastating tsunami across the Lesser Sunda Islands region. It destroyed most of the coastal infrastructure. Maumere was devastated by more than 90% in this natural disaster.

Climate

According to the Köppen-Geiger climate classification, the Maumere region enjoys a desert climate with an average temperature of 27.6°C. The best time to visit falls between April and October.

Maumere Today

The surrounding landscapes are defined by the Maumere Gulf. Once considered one of the world's finest diving sites, the gulf now suffers from destructive fishing practices and repeated chemical use that have degraded its coral reefs. A 2007 scientific report revealed that approximately 75% of these reefs have been destroyed.

Maumere has a predominantly Christian population. Since 2005, the city has served as the seat of the Diocese of Maumere, separated from the Archdiocese of Ende. The kabupaten is divided into thirty parishes. The Saint Joseph Church of Maumere is its principal cathedral.

Most of Maumere's accommodation establishments are located in the eastern part of town, near the beach, along the road leading to Larantuka. You'll find roughly a dozen tourist facilities, including bungalows and hotels. Visitors can enjoy the traditional Flores gastronomy here.

Maumere is an important stop during a visit to the island. With its rapidly developing tourism sector now playing an increasingly significant role in the local economy, the city hosts cultural events to promote tourism.

Mount Egon, also known as Namang, is a volcano located near Maumere. It rises to approximately 1,700 meters in elevation. It's perfect for panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. It shelters a crater 350 meters wide that, during the rainy season, hosts a small volcanic lake.

To get around Maumere, you can rent a scooter, hire a driver, use a shared taxi, or travel by local bus. Most public buses in Maumere run to Koka Beach.

Air

The city of Maumere has the small Frans Xavier Seda Airport. It's a basic airstrip with a modest terminal located approximately 3 km from town. Regular flights connect Maumere to Denpasar, Kupang, Sumba, and Labuanbajo.

Long-Distance Buses

From Moni, which is 43 km from Maumere, buses heading to Ende depart from the bus station on the western outskirts of town.
